Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chef's Choice 677 Cordless Electric 1-3/4-Quart TeakettleCustomer Review: Does its job very well, but not what Alton Brown promised Summary: 5 Stars
As other reviewers have explained, this electric teakettle does an excellent job of boiling water in a jiffy. I completely agree that it's a 5-star model at an affordable price. It boils water fast. It doesn't take up a burner on my always-overloaded stove. And I particularly like that the kettle comes off the base, so you don't have a cord trailing around. If you're looking for a teakettle; you don't need to read more -- this one does the job.
However, I chose THIS particular model because it was the kettle (or seemed to be the kettle) that Alton Brown referred to in his Gear book. And in that regard I'm just an eensy bit disappointed.
You see, I'd been resisting buying one of these gizmos because, gosh darn it, I don't NEED another single purpose item in my kitchen! I just _wanted_ one. Alton's book gave me the excuse I needed to indulge myself: he said an electric kettle was good for boiling water, but it's even more useful for keeping stock hot for risotto and it's great for hard boiling eggs.
You just put the eggs into the carafe, cold from the frig; add water to cover; when the water boils, let the eggs just SIT there for 15 minutes. Cool them under running water and voila! hard-cooked eggs with no ugly green yolks. This works fine on the stove, of course, but you have to keep an eye on the water, to watch for it to come to the boil; since the kettle turns off automatically when the water boils, it's safer and more convenient. Or so I thought.
I've boiled water in the kettle, but I haven't managed to do the egg thing. The top is simply too small to put your hand in (at least while holding an egg) and I'm not thrilled about the idea of rolling a raw egg down the sides. (Cleaning this gizmo isn't something I look forward to doing, especially with cooked-on egg.) So I've continued to use the stovetop for boiling eggs... and I don't make risotto all that often.
On the other hand, I DO use it for making tea -- so I've no complaint about the kettle doing what it's advertised to do!
It's a great kettle, but if you're looking for a multipurpose tool, you may want to look at other models.
Customer Review: Super QUICK water boiler !!! Working for 4 years now... Summary: 5 Stars
So, I decide to leave a comment after I went back to look for this item again for my parents (for who we bought this and they had a small glitch after 3 years using it, and they want another one of these and maybe two !!! It's my moms words...) I saw a lot of negative feedback on here and it's not fear...
This product is great ! We use it once a day, in the morning and been using it for 4 years now and it still works !
The look is great, the grip is sturdy, you do have to lift the top to pour more water in it but so to any pot !! Nothing broke so far... and it boils water SUPER quick ! Such a convenience in the morning ! It has an automated little handle where you push it down and then when it's done boiling it clicks back to it's normal position... so no worries about over boiling the water on the stove or worrying if you forgot to turn it off before leaving it...
On the other side, we bought this for my parents about 3 years ago, and they use it very very very frequently like 3-6 times per day if not more, they have lots of guests and they loved this item, it just stopped working for them and they said it's just not boiling the water when you click the little handle, BUT they want another one and they been looking for it everywhere, like walmart and what not, and couldn't find it, so for Christmas they requested TWO of these !!! That's how much they loved it. It's good thing we know how to find it again...
This pot is great if you are a frequent user or not, it will work for minimum 3 years for sure and then maybe you'll find another great invention that you will want to try! :) I do recommend it to anyone, look at the reviews there are more 5 stars than negative ones... so it's your decision.... just give it a try, you can always return it if you don't like it :)
Customer Review: Now it's been a year Summary: 5 Stars
So I cannot yet speak to the durability questions. But convenience is superlative. I have been boiling water on stove tops for a pot of tea for nearly 40 years now, and this beats the stove top hands down! It is the best method I have ever used.
It is fast. It is easy. It shuts off automatically. It shows you how much water is inside. The lid remains shut while pouring, and it does not drip at all. It wastes no heat, but directs it all to the water. There should be no mineral build up. It is solid and secure (unlike the plastic one it replaces that failed and leaked all over after three months.)
I can see no downside on this yet. I have this at my office desk, fill it up in 4 minutes later have boiling water. The base remains plugged in on my desk, the pot is put away. I will be buying another one for home. And probably a couple as gifts as well. Saves time and money, is convenient and easy to use. Perfect!
1 year update:
I have now purchased 4 of these. I use mine daily at home and at the office; my sister loves hers, my daughter loves hers. There is no bad taste, no buildup, no nothing. And hot? It is barely hot.....I just don't get you people. Are you sure you got this one? Mine still works flawlessly. Still love it.
No plastic one I ever had lasted more than 6 months without burning itself. Both of mine are going strong after several hundred pots of tea.
Customer Review: Insanely Great! Summary: 5 Stars
This being the first electric kettle I have owned, I don't know how much this one differs from more expensive/less expensive kettles. But, as far as I'm concerned, this kettle is the balls!
The kettle weighs as much as it should if it were a tea kettle full of water, it's not too heavy, and easy to manage. It seems easier to control than most kettles, though, because of the molded, textured handle.
The pour spout was practically spill-less, except when trying to pour too little from the spout at a time, then water would tend to dribble. I am extremely pleased with this because I tend to need to measure boiling water into measuring cups, and it's hard to do that when the water won't go in the cup, and ends up all over the counter instead.
There is a water level indicator on the back of the unit, sort of under the handle. Not the best place for it, but it didn't really bother me. I don't need to know what the water level is all that much, and if I think I'm going to cook more than might be in there, I'll check. The fact that it holds nearly 2 liters of water meant that refills didn't need to take place very often, even with coffee/tea/instant oatmeal every day!
I love this machine. It's comfortable to use, easy, and looks really cool. Who could ask for more?!?
Customer Review: Love this kettle!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely LOVE this kettle! I purchased it over 2 years ago and have been using it daily ever since.
After reading an article in the newspaper on how much more energy efficient and quicker electric kettles are at boiling water than using a stove or microwave, I bought my first electric kettle and have not been disappoint at all!
I haven't had any problems with the spout leaking (a complaint by another reviewer) and I really like that it have an automatic shutoff (no worries about leaving and forgetting about it). It has a really nice feature of a clear plastic area along the handle side of the pot so you can see the water level. (I drew a line on it with a felt marker to show me exactly how much water to put in for one cup of tea - that way I can accurately fill and heat only exactly what I need.)
The kettle is metal and gets very hot (duh!) and will probably cause a severe burn if touched. This is no different the a kettle used on a stove and should be placed out of reach of small children.
I only use filtered water in it so I haven't had any problem with lime or hard water build up.
It is definitely worth every penny!!!
