Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chaney Instrument 13131 Atomix Dartmouth Desktop Alarm ClockCustomer Review: 6 month clock Summary: 2 Stars
I have owned this for 2 years, I will not change time/ at daylight savings change. I usually take the battery out and reset the clock from scratch. That did work a few times, the display corrected itself. That did not work this year however. Pressing the "rescan for signal" is supposed to make it update to the correct time, but it does not.
There is a DST button on the bottom, put it on eastern time and it is one hour behind. It is one hour behind no matter what I do. Well until Fall when the time changes back, then it is accurate again.
Contact with the manufacturer/ Chaney Inst. has had no positive result.
I bought an atomix wall clock a few months ago, it would not change either. But when I reset the signal and just set the clock aside, sometime on Monday it did catch up. Note Saturday was the change over date.
The desk clock is Still one hour late, even after repeated restarts.
Note: I also have a Sharp Atomic Clock, with the same features which has not missed a change up and is always correct.
So if you want a desk clock that you can use for a few months out of the year, this is a good one. I do like the features, IF they would function. But if you need a clock for all year round, the Sharp would probably be better.
Customer Review: Deskclock, not a wall clock and too dark to easily read Summary: 2 Stars
I thought I was buying a wall clock. It is a desktop clock and needs to be on a desk when there is a lamp over it. Can't read it from across the room. I have other atomix clocks that have lighter colored faces. The lighter color contrasts more with the black letters and is more easily read! The photo is deceiving and seems to be the lighter color, but it is probably a photo taken with the light turned on the clock. You can briefly turn on the light by touching the large button on top of the clock, it stays on just a few seconds.
However, it is a really cool clock with all the great information so if you need a desktop clock with temperature, it is fantastic. You can install batteries, choose your time zone and the instructions say you have to set the time then it will later change to exact time. You can do this but you don't have to. You can leave it for several hours and it will set the time by itself.
Customer Review: DST doesn't work, no light saves batteries Summary: 2 Stars
At first I was annoyed that I couldn't read the clock much of the time--you have to hit the bar on top of the clock to turn on the light. Which goes off when you stop pressing the bar. Then I decided it was good--no bright light to interfere with my sleep hygiene (as my doctor calls it).
Then, a year later, I was annoyed that I can't get it to change to DST. I managed to change it to DST when I bought it, and back in the fall. But now the DST button just changes time zones over and over. And it doesn't pick up the radio signal so great any more. I didn't move, and I didn't move the clock. I did change the batteries (all the company suggests in its leaflet). Great idea, nice big numbers, love the temperature, wish it told the correct time.
Customer Review: only good for a alarm Summary: 2 Stars
i havent had a battery issue nor a loss of time issue. But i dont believe the temp in my room is accurate at all. Also if i want to read the time, i have to pick it up. Too dark? Better hold the button down, didnt get the time after the light shuts off 2 seconds later. If it wasnt for the fact, the alarm will shut off after 3 minutes or so. I'd go back to my cell phone. I am somewhat looking for a new one. I could care less for this one.
Customer Review: Viewing Angle -- Showstopper Problem Summary: 1 Stars
The basic functionality on this clock is good. I do agree with the previous viewers on the problem of daylight savings time resets. You have to open up the bottom of the clock and press a button to set to daylight savings time -- a manual process.
Having said that, there is a showstopper problem with this clock -- the viewing angle of the digital display is very limited. When it sits on my desk, I cannot read it. The text disappears. I must pick it up and rotate the angle vertically across the horizontal axis to see what it says. This is a constant annoyance -- so much so that I am throwing this clock away and getting a new one. I am amazed that this clock even made it past the design phase with this huge problem.
