Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Carlson 0941PW Extra-Tall Walk-Thru Gate with Pet Door, WhiteCustomer Review: Carlson Extra-Tall Pet Gate Summary: 5 Stars
this is exactly what i was looking for. the instructions were a little weird, but i figured it out (and without my husband's help!) took me about 1/2 hour to get it perfect. when researching this gate, i wasn't sure if it was going to work for me because it's needed in a doorway to a spare bedroom, and the door will still need to close from time to time.. didn't see a lot of feedback as to whether a door could close with this fitted in its doorway. well, it does close but is a little difficult to turn the knob to open the door because the doorknob happens to be right behind one of the bars to the gate.. but if you have small enough hands it should be fine. i got this gate to keep my big dog out of the litter box. it works perfectly. now my dog just sits in front of the gate whining because he can't get in.. take that, dog! the 1st day or 2 my cat couldn't completely figure out how to get out of the pet door, but he eventually got it. the only concern i would have would be to make sure your cat doesn't get stuck in the bars trying to get out that way. my cat almost did, but he's too overweight to actually get stuck.. but it still freaked me out a little. the gate was a little bent when we got it, but my husband was able to bend it back to shape once it was put up. super easy to use, this was the perfect solution to our problem.
Customer Review: Cat door may be too big if you have small dogs. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this gate to keep my dogs upstairs. I chose this particular gate because it seemed tall enough that my Labrador wouldn't be able to jump it and it also has a door that allows the cats to come and go since their litter and food are upstairs but they like to spend their days downstairs. The installation was very simple after I read the instructions, and opening and closing the gate is easy. The only problem is the opening for the cat it too big, it's around 7" by 10". The size allows my Norwich Terrier to walk through also. I've solved this problem by keeping the cat door closed and cutting off one of the bars in the door providing an opening just big enough for the cats but too small for the dog. Another buyer noted that their cat got stuck in the bars, my oldest cat also got stuck trying to go through the bars on the sides but I used some treats to lure her through the door and I've had no problems since, so training your cat may be necessary. Also if you are installing this gate at the top of a staircase be sure to line it up with the very edge of the top stair if possible, the banister is in the way for me to do this, but seeing as the gate has a bottom edge that you have to step over it would be safer. Overall I am very happy with this gate and would recommend it just think about the cat door if you also have small dogs.
Customer Review: Boy, have I needed this! Summary: 5 Stars
Well, I am now buying my third of these gates, so, obviously it works very well for me. I needed the extra height for my big guys who could jump over the baby gates I got. And I hated having to try to step over the baby gates, especially when carrying something. So, this gate with a door is wonderful. I can block off the kitchen so that the dogs don't counter surf or raid the garbage can any more. The third gate is going in the doorway to the vanity area in my master bath, as my devil dog has figured how to open the cabinets and pull out stuff (some of which is poisonous.)
As others have warned, it is more stable with the cups installed, but it was easy to do with just a pencil to mark the position and a screwdriver. And, altho' I have a masters degree, I couldn't figure out how the Da#%ed latch worked at first. No directions with the gate. Finally one reviewer gave me the hint. Lift up the white latch on the end nearest to the red locking mechanism.
Added 2/9/10. While I am still sold on this gate, I need to add one caution: You would be amazed how large a dog can squeeze through the small "cat" door. My 30+ pound cattle dog mix (kinda chunky) and my 60+ pound Irish Wolfhound mix (lean and wiry) just managed it. From now on that little door will remain closed.
Customer Review: Dog/cat gate Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this gate because we needed to create a space that our dogs can't get into our cats' "stuff". The first thing I figured out was that you don't need to drill the "holder things" into the wall. It is a tension gate so the more tension you put on it the more it all pushes together, so if you are unable to open the door to the gate (or close it)..release some tension (or add some). The cat door is a good size, we have two cats, one is rather large (not fat but tall and long) and he is able to get in and out of it easily. Neither cat is afraid of it either which is a plus. With that said my smaller dog can get through it, which we figured would happen before we bought it (12lb mutt-the large cat is bigger then him), but we are working on training him not to. Other people reviewed that their larger dog was able to get through the cat opening, and one dog was even able to climb over the gate, I can only say that a determined dog will do whatever they have to do to get what they want. Overall I am very happy with it. The locking mechanism is easy to use and it is very sturdy.
Customer Review: This gate is exactly what I needed!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently ordered this gate and I am MORE than pleased with it. I have 3 cats and recently adopted a dog several months ago. I've been using 2 litter boxes in my house for about a year now but since 2 of my cats are no longer kittens I wanted to cut it down to 1 box. Also I've been having issues with my dog getting in 1 of the boxes.
I was using a baby gate for a litter box I have in my spare bathroom but one of my cats refuses to jump the gate to use the bathroom which is why I was still using 2 litter boxes. After seeing this gate I had to try it.
The gate was a breeze to install. I have it set up in the door-frame of my spare bathroom. The little door is great and my cats have no problem using it. My dog is a Pitbull/Rotty mix so he definitely cannot fit into/through the kitty door, haha. My wife loves the fact that the gate can be opened when she goes in to clean the litter box as she hated having to step over the old baby gate.
Overall I think this gate is wonderful and I would definitely recommend it.
