i wanted to give this gate a 4 star for the narrow opening but just couldn't...it really is a nice gate & works very well. we used it to keep our two small pups out of our room. one dog is 12 lbs. the other is 14 lbs...just to give you an idea of the width of the bar spaces & the pet door. the instructions were easy to follow; i installed without drilling holes, but you could if you have a larger dog or child that might easily pull the gate out of position. it served its purpose very well. without the drilling, it worked just fine & installed within 5-9 minutes. the gate latch can be locked or unlocked. if you have a child, i would recommend locking since a child could lift the latch & walk through; or worse, could fall down when gate swings open. this gate is expandable, a feature we did not use. very well made quality, functional item. i would buy again if needed another gate. the best price around & amazon is always a pleasure to shop.Customer Review: Perfect fit!

We just got our first dog and needed an option for keeping her confined to the kitchen if we have company, are cleaning, or don't want to have to lock her in her crate. Our kitchen has an extended counter so we don't have a doorway but instead a 4-foot wide opening between the end of the counter and the opposite wall. Most of the pet gates that I found in PetSmart or online weren't wide enough to fit without having to buy expensive extensions or else they required mounting, which I wasn't willing to do since I want to be able to remove it easily without any evidence it was there. We did end up having to buy the separate extension to swap out one of the ones that came with the gate (she was able to fit through the openings it left on each side), but now it's a perfect fit and does a great job of keeping her in. It's sturdy, easy to adjust, and was very easy to put together. Great product!Customer Review: This gate perfectly meets my needs.

I've had this gate for about 3 weeks now and am ordering another. Prior to ordering this gate I had a pressure gate blocking the door of the room where my cats' food is. I had the prior gate situated approximately 8 inches off the ground to allow the cats to go in and out but restrict the dog's access to that room. Every time I needed to go into the room I had to remove the gate which was a problem if my hands were full. This gate solves everything - I can easily go in and out, the gate unlocks easily with just one hand, the cats can come and go freely and the dog stays out. I do have a large dog (90 lbs.) so I don't have a problem with the dog being able to fit through the door as others have experienced. Installation was extremely easy. I did not install the permanent cups and have no problems with stability.Customer Review: A Knee Saver

We purchased two of these gates so that our basset hound puppy could be contained in our kitchen-breakfast room area of the house and not have free reign of the entire downstairs portion of our home. Previous to purchasing these gates, we had used Evenflo baby gates with no walk-through door. To say that our knees appreciate these new gates is an understatement. On several occasions my wife has sung the praises of the new gates. And the fact that we do not have to remove the gates from the door openings when we have guests in our home is a true blessing.
The quality of the material that the gates are made of has been quite a nice surprise, and the price on Amazon.com was great. We were able to buy two gates through Amazon.com for less than the price of one of them from our local Pet Smart.

We purchased 2 of these gates in order to allow our cat to pass freely when necessary, yet keep the dog and cat separated at other times. We paid $39.97 at WalMart. That price probably can't be beaten. Installation took all of about 15 minutes from box to finished installation. Yes, the gate opening will close up when you properly tension the unit in the door opening. Follow the instructions, and don't over tighten things, and you will be just fine. Kudos to Carlson for a quality product at a reasonable price. NOTE: This gate is also available as a child-safe gate, without the small door, under the Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate Taupe label, which sells for $39.95 direct from Amazon. If you don't need the small access door to allow certain pets to come and go, that might be the gate for you.
