Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of CDN DTC375 ProAccurate Digital Programmable Candy & Deep Fry ThermometerCustomer Review: DON'T TRUST THIS ITEM Summary: 2 StarsThis is not water-proof. It dropped in the sink, and I grabbed it out immediately. I thought everything was OK, but after making about 10 batches of lollipops, I realized that it was no longer keeping the proper temp. In fact, it was about 10 degrees below true temp. Therefore, all the batches were ruined -- not hard crack. I loved the thermometer until this happened. For the price, I expected much more.
On the plus side: before it stopped reading the correct temperature, I enjoyed the fact that it had pre-set temperatures. This was a mighty help in making candy. I also liked that it beeped with it was within five degrees of required temperature, and the beeps became more frequent as it reached temp. This is a great thermometer if you are handier than I am, but if you might drop it into liquid, all bets are off.
Customer Review: Excellent, but not quite great Summary: 5 StarsWe're very happy with the CDN temp gauge. The preset settings for candy, etc. (230F, 234, 242, 250, 270, 300, 320, are easy to cycle through, and if my wife needs a different temp, she sets in on the next lower preset, and then watches it from that temp (say 234) to the desired temp (say 238) -- after resetting the preset to the next higher temp to silence the beeping. The display is big and much easier to read than the glass bulb/liquid type that we've used for years (that my wife has to bend down to read -- with her readers). The included pan-side clip, which is different from the illustration (perhaps improved?) holds the gauge securely in position, with the tip above the pan bottom. The included cup with hole is a splatter/heat shield, and it fits around the shaft. The gauge also works well for checking turkey doneness. It would be great if there were an extra button to allow you to bump up a preset to the exact temp you want.
Customer Review: Poor Design Summary: 1 StarsThe clip does a very poor job of keeping the thermometer in place. It is nearly impossible to keep it from falling over, which is terribly frustrating and unsafe.
Customer Review: good, but not the best Summary: 3 StarsI got this for my mom and she tells me that it is fairly accurate, but because it is so long she has a hard time keeping it from falling, even with the little clip thing. I think a regular thermometer would have satisfied her just as much. it's just not worth the cost.
Customer Review: Nice, accurate and fast Summary: 4 StarsI got this thermometer to do chocolate tempering. It reads the temperatures pretty quickly. I think the documentation says you will have an accurate temperature within 6 seconds. It's nice and small, but lacking the ability to set temperature alerts on your own. It does contain several alerts, but I live at high altitude, so the candy stages for me are not at the regular sea level temperatures. But it is nice and easy to use, barring those minor things.
