Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brother CS6000i Sew Advance Sew Affordable 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing MachineCustomer Review: Excellent Machine Summary: 5 Stars
This machine is wonderful. I've only had it for a week and I've already made 3 sets of curtains, quilted covers for drafty vents, and 5 other projects. It is super easy to thread with step by step "directions" on the machine so I won't have to dig out the manual if I don't use it for a while. I ran out of bobbin thread and it took less than a minute to take it out, wind the bobbin, re-thread the machine, put the bobbin back in, and start sewing again. I haven't been sewing that long and this machine makes me look like a pro.
Changing parts is easy-the foot comes off and a new one snaps on in seconds; the quilting table easily slides on, and all the spare parts you could possibly need are included. I also like the reverse button and "needle up/down" button. The machine stops with the needle down (but you can easily change this setting) and the touch of a button brings it up-no wheel to turn. Plus, you can sew just one stitch by pressing the button twice.
The only problem I've had is it doesn't like cheap thread-which another reviewer also mentioned. The thread only broke twice (which is 1000 times less than my old machine) but I decided that quality thread was worth the extra few bucks.
I brag about this machine to all my friends. I would highly recommend it to anyone doing a little or a lot of sewing. Happy sewing.
Customer Review: Great for beginner!! Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to re-learn how to sew after at least 25 years. The last time I touched a sewing machine was in home ec (seems to be a common theme amongst many reviewers). I did not know if I would enjoy it, so I did not want to invest in anything more than $200. This little machine came with the right price and have enough functions for me to grow into. And I am very pleased with my purchase. Yes, the instruction manual could be improved, but it gets its points across and I was able to start sewing pretty quickly!
Granted, the last machine I used was my mother's Singer from the 70's, so I was used to heavy duty metal components and the light weight plastic parts felt flimsy. Having said that, once I started using it, I became accustomed to the levers and such fairly quickly.
Many of the critical reviews here mentioned how the users were disappointed on how flimsy and poor quality it is.... but when a sewing machine can cost up to thousands of dollars, what did they expect from a $150 machine? I have no illusions that this machine will last me 20+ years, but if I could save some money by hemming my own pants and making some soft furnishings, the machine will pay itself off in no time!
All in all, I feel that this is a good start-up machine for beginners and for those who want to get back to sewing after a long while.
Customer Review: Fantastic machine for the timid sewer! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic machine for those of us who are timid sewers and are new to sewing.
My first machine was also a Brother and it was a piece of junk, so I was timid to buy another Brother machine, but after reading the reviews here and on other sites, I took the plunge. I'm so glad that I did!
I particularly like the digitally display on the machine. It's very clear which stitch you chose, what the length of the stitch is and what the stitch will look like. Also, if you make an error, the machine lets you know with an error code (the key is in the back of the manual), so you learn what not to do the next time!
The little "extras" like the thread cutter on the side of the machine as well as the thread cutters built into the bobbin winder and the drop-in bobbin case are wonderful.
I fully expected to have to sit and read the whole manual before I could begin sewing, and thankfully that wasn't the case. The quick start guide got me off and sewing in about 15 minutes.
The only tricky thing I found was trying to thread the machine. I had a hard time getting the thread under the bar just above the presser foot, but once I read the instructions a few times and tried it a few times, I quickly got the hang of it. Now I don't have any trouble at all.
Customer Review: Excellent machine especially for price Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned the CS6000i for about 5 months.
I purchased it as a secondary machine to my old metal 1974 New Home workhorse when we began to sell specialized dresses for Regency wear.
It quickly has become my main machine because of it's ease of use and excellent stitch quality.
Cons: very light weight so it can move a little with vigorous sewing, I put it on a rubberized mat to secure it better. I've had no problem now even when sewing heavy fleece robes. Can't recommend auto-threader as that was too difficult to use, so I still thread the needle by "eyeballing" it.
Plastic housing and knobs...but essential parts are still metal (unlike my old New Home that is solid metal...and weighs the same as a boat anchor).
Pros: Sews wonderfully, even heavy fleece (balks a little if it is more than 2 layers of heavy fleece...recommend something like my old New Home if you need to do a lot of very heavy fabric sewing).
Very easy to thread and use. Professional looking stitches. Specialty stitches. All necessary and specialty feet come with machine.
Surprised that it has a long (limited) warranty.
Wonderful little machine for a fraction of the price of the professional models that require a course to learn how to use.
Customer Review: I Love It! Summary: 5 Stars
I've only had this sewing machine for about 3 weeks and am Loving It! I had never sewn before (outside of a button or a 'soppy' hem) and already I'm producing pillow covers and tote bags that are looking 'great'!
I did lots of research online before deciding on this machine and so far it meets up to all of the factors I was looking for. I found the instruction manual a little sketchy to understand and wish it explained more about when to use specific 'feet/needles' etc... but I suppose that's what a 'learn how to sew' book is for ;) The machine came with plenty of needles/bobbins/etc to get me off and running! and as soon as I figure out the 'walking foot' ;) I'm going to start my first patchwork quilt!
Some of the other reviews I've read stated that others had trouble with the thread 'jamming' up... so far I've had no such issues. The overall construction seems a little 'flimsy' but I suppose that helps with the 'lightweight' nature of it and that is another bonus, since it's not a bear to lug around! The 'cover' is not a carrying case as it doesn't actually 'attach' to the machine... but just the same a 'cover' was one of the features I was looking for and this does its duty :)
Overall I would highly recommend this machine to anyone wanting to learn to sew :)
