I had been shopping for a mandolin-style slicer for quite a while when I stumbled upon the Borner v-slicer here on Amazon. After vacilating for a while, I decided to buy the unit when I had other things to order.
I have now used the slicer for a month. I have never felt that my money was as well-spent on any other tool I've ever purchased. Sure, it's sharp and can be hazardous if you don't use the safety features. But use the unit as recommended and it's a dream. You can slice a tomato, onion, or bell pepper in uniform 1/16th inch slices in seconds.
Buy this slicer!
Four years later- This slicer still works great, and I use it all the time. The different blade sets make the slicer versatile. Next month, I'm cooking for a fund raiser; I'm using the slicer to make garnishes as well as home-made kettle chips tossed in truffle oil. This is still the best kitchen gadget I've ever purchased.

This purchase of the V-Slicer was actually a replacement of a V-Slicer that we had purchased at least 10 years ago. When because of age/brittleness, etc. my husband overpowered our old V-Slicer I was determined to replace it with something more 'state of the art' or a big brand name because surely something like Cuisinart would be a better product. I did pretty extensive research on every slicer that I could find (including some V-Slicer copycats) reading the consumer ratings and comments for as many as I could find. I found that I already had the best available (especially for the price) and ordered a new V-Slicer to replace the broken one. WOW! They had actually improved the design and made it easier to use than my old one. I am 100% pleased that I chose the Borner V-Slicer Plus and when this one wears out (even stainless steel blades will dull after 10 years) I will purchase another one!!Customer Review: Slice it up easy!

Recently my daughter and I decided to cook a gourmet meal together to celebrate my birthday. One of our dishes was Potatoes Anna. We needed consistently thin slices of potato, and at the gourmet cooking class we took, the instructor used a mandoline to accomplish this. So I ordered this amazing tool. In no time at all I had evenly sliced five pounds of potatoes. Arrange one layer in fan form, slather with butter, sprinkle on sea salt and white pepper and then start all over again. At the meal the potatoes were a beautiful and unusual side dish, which everyone (even our non-gourmet husbands) enjoyed. You absolutely must use the safety holder included or you may very well slice off the tip of a finger as one of my friends did with another brand. If you enjoy cooking and entertaining, you should have one in your kitchen. This one, made in Germany, is inexpensive and effective. You had me at "German Surgical Steel Blades."
It's light, yet stays in place. It's long enough to put over your pan to let the cuttings fall out. It can cut veggies like a dozen different ways.
It comes in a handy sheath that wall-mounts or stands tall and holds the two other blade attachments.
It saves SO much time, and I quit using knives/cutting board to cut veggies. This provides perfect, EASY, uniform slices every time, and at twice the speed. Plus, it just makes it plain fun. And it just rinces clean with ease.
This product cannot be more highly recommended and should be essential in all households unless you have a severe chance of a kid finding it and playing with it (or if you're just super accident prone from not paying attention). The blades are explosed once out of the safety sheath and are SHARP. Use the hand guard.

I purchased the V-Slicer over ten years ago and it has been a faithful companion in the kitchen. The speed with which it slices/dices onions makes it more than worth the price. You can make french fries or julienne fries, onion rings, scalloped potatoes, carrot or celery sticks...the list is endless! Cleanup is no more than a rinse under water. The safety holder ensures that you won't be suffering any mishaps. But for safety's sake, keep this appliance away from the kids. The blades are VERY SHARP and can deliver a nasty cut if you don't handle them carefully. For that reason, I never wash them in the sink where suds can hide them and risk injury. But these warnings aside, this is a wonderful and versatile tool. It is as useful as a mandoline at a fraction of the price. You will reach for it often and the V-Slicer will be one of your favorite and most used kitchen tools.
