Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece Set

Customer Review: Very good product for the price and my use level
Summary: 3 Stars

I use this slicer maybe 2-3x a month, mostly to make french fries. It works quite well. It's very very sharp, the first time I used it I was not so careful and cut my finger -- but hey, it was a very clean cut, so healed quickly! So be careful. Also, it's a tad awkward to use at first, if you bear down too heavily on the potato, for example, the spud will get stuck in the blades. So a very light touch is all you need. Now that I'm used to it, it's indispensible because it speeds up slicing tasks -- esp. for fries -- tremendously and of course makes perfectly uniform slices so everything cooks beautifully. Highly recommend it for average use.

Customer Review: pros and a big con
Summary: 3 Stars

Yes, this slicer is very sharp... and I would have loved to give it a spin, but I had the hardest time releasing it from the safety clip, that I pulled it too hard, and it came flying out of the "safety" container, slicing the pad of my thumb off to the bone... how ironic for a safety feature. :T It's been 4 years since that incident, and my thumb has still not healed all the way, and I have long since given my slicer away. The mere sight of it gives me the willies. But, if you're looking for a sharp mandolin, I would say this is probably the sharpest out there. Good luck.. be safe everyone.. buy a kevlar glove.

Customer Review: Quick and sharp
Summary: 3 Stars

If you really like your vege's sliced consistant in size and need a batch in a hurry or you have to prepare sandwiches, salads or slaw for a small army, this is your right hand assistant in a pinch. The blades are extremely sharp so be careful. Dicing is a little tricky and it comes out more like shreds but the job is still done quickly.I would recommend this product for anyone who has to do a considerable amount of slicing like onions, tomatoes, peppers, even cabbage. It saves you alot of time and muscle. However its alot to deal with for the day to day same slicing jobs of daily kitchen prep work.

Customer Review: Average Product
Summary: 3 Stars

When I first bought this slicer six months ago, it worked great. It cut nicely and very smoothly. No need to exert too much force to slice. After few times of use, it started to get harder to slice. Soft items like cucumbers are easy to slice but harder items like carrots were difficult. It will slice and gets stuck and it's hard to push or pull to get the carrot out of the slicer. Since the knife edges are sharp, it's kind of scary to exert too much force just in case it slips and get your hand sliced. This is average product. Good for soft items and be careful for harder items.

Customer Review: Good Mandoline for the Price
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a good mandoline for cutting soft vegetables, but it has a hard time cutting potatoes. The hand guard is not made for holding potatoes well and they keep slipping out of the holding tines. I did use it to cut cucumbers to make pickles and onions for a julienne fry, but it takes more muscles to cut potatoes or cabbage. It is easy to clean by just rinsing it off after use, but it doesn't store well as there is nothing to hang it with apart from a v-shape that is near the middle of the back of the holder so it hangs out from the hook I tried to hang it on.
