Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece SetCustomer Review: Most used "gadget" in our kitchen! Summary: 5 Stars
I can't say enough about this Borner V-slicer! Yes, you have to be awake and sober to use it, but I am on my 2nd one in 30 years, and have just about worn THAT one out. I have never felt the need to sharpen the surgical steel blades on either of these units. One was given away and my current one I've had for 15 years. I have made dozens of pounds of french-fies with this unit, not to mention a mountian of sliced potatoes for dozens of scalloped potato dishes. Bias cut veggies for your stir-fry in a moment! I've tried a half-dozen diagonal "mandoline" type slicers and they don't hold a candle to the "V" configuration of the Borner. Fresh tomatoes fear its name! Buy one..you won't be sorry. (And no, I don't work for the company. I just think people should have GOOD gadgets, since there so many poor ones out there.)
Customer Review: It works! It really works! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not terribly good with knives, I'm cheap and I don't do enough cooking or have enough space to justify a food processor. So for years, every time I'd slice or dice, I'd dream of an easier way. After much debate, I finally bought the Borner. When it arrived I unpacked it, looked it over and thought..."Gosh those blades look sharp!" and put it back in the box. I had visions of clumsy handling, uneven slices and eventually a severed finger. Well, I finally got up the nerve to use the thing...and what do you know? Thin even slices, vegis used up to the very last bit, and NO ACCIDENTS! The holder works incredibly well at holding the food and your palm naturally advances the plunger as you slice. A quick rinse at the sink and it's back into the storage unit. It's so easy to use and clean, I think I'll even use it for small jobs.
Customer Review: Why did I wait so long? Summary: 5 Stars
At last...julienned vegetables in my own kitchen! And so fast, too! This tool is a cinch to use, clean ,and store. All of the pieces store neatly on the plastic holder / case in a small space. It creates perfect slices, strips and chucks with minimal mess and cleanup - no juice dripping everywhere, because the blades are so sharp! I have really shopped around and compared prices, almost bought a more well known European brand at a lot more $$, but decided to buy this one because of the price along with rave customer reviews. Well, they are all right on - if you have been thinking about buying a mandoline, or know a cook who you're buying a present for - this gadget rocks! The box also has a really cool side view that is a photo of beautifully sliced vegetables. You won't be disappointed.
Customer Review: Deedeedinah Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this slicer at a garage sale over 20 years ago for $5. The person getting rid of it couldn't have been a foody . Who knows when they bought it or how long they used it. It was the best $5 I ever spent. I use it constantly and on many different foods, even cold meats and ripe tomatoes. It's still as sharp as ever. I will say I don't normally use all the attachments only because it's so quick why bother to stop and change it out. The deep palm holder keeps food firmly in place. I love this thing. Mine has a holder for everything, locking the blade safely away and it stays out on my counter. It certainly beats the price of the expensive metal ones (which my daughter has and it doesn't work as well). I LOVE THIS SLICER. And now that I found it again, I will buy my daughter one.
Customer Review: Cautionary Tale for an Excellent Tool Summary: 5 Stars
You can believe the excellent reviews; this mandoline works simply and beautifully. It works much better than the expensive and rock-solid Williams-Sonoma stainless steel model we received as a wedding present.
For my friends at Amazon, I ask you to please use the safety holder that comes with the V-Slicer. I ran my thumb onto the blade while slicing a potato by hand. I am experienced and careful in the kitchen, but the potato slipped just a tiny bit. The blade traveled 1/2 an inch into my thumb before I pulled back (that is very deep, when you're talking about a thumb). It created a thick "flap" - 'nuff said. It was completely painless at the time, but now, the incredibly annoying recovery!!! So take the cautionary comments of other users VERY seriously.
