Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker TROS1500 SpaceMaker Traditional Toaster Oven, WhiteCustomer Review: Happy cooking! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to replace my old SpaceMaker and I like this one better.
The temperature control is accurate and the oven is easy to clean. I have a small kitchen so having it mounted under a cabinet is a plus!
Customer Review: Attractive Design Summary: 4 Stars
Bought for under my white cabinets. Blended nicely almost unnoticeable. The only feature it is lacking is being able to bake without timer. No "keep on" selection.
Customer Review: Very please with my toaster oven Summary: 4 Stars
I needed a space saver and I am very please with my oven toaster. I use it for toasts and little warming ups.
Customer Review: easy install Summary: 4 Stars
this installed pretty easy not as bad as other people have said control's are not as easy as prior model
Customer Review: OK unit but beware of mounting Summary: 3 Stars
Pros: The only under-the-cabinet toaster oven available, attractive design, deeper than old model
Cons: Inadequate hardware for cabinets with overhang molding, mounting hardware is metric, very difficult to find, poor design for toaster control, no tray, much more expensive than table top equivalent
Whether you decide to buy this unit or not boils down to how much you value the under-the-cabinet mounting. This unit is almost double the price of comparable table top only unit. As far as I can tell, Black and Decker has the only ones designed for under cabinet mounting.
The installation procedure itself is not difficult if you are comfortable with a drill. If your cabinet has flat bottom, it really should not be a problem at all. If your cabinet has an overhang molding, 1 inch or more, then read carefully. Like other reviews say, the 4 mounting screws are the major problem. They are metric and the ones provided are indeed not long enough. The screws you need are metric M5 x 0.8. The longest ones provided are 60mm. For a 1 inch cabinet overhang, I need 70 mm screws. They are not easy to find (even in top national chain hardware stores), plus they cost $1.30 each. Some review says to use 10-32 screw, it won't work on mine ( you may be able to engage 1 or two threads at most). They are definitely metric. You are restricted to using metric due to the threads in the mounting heat shield. Of course you can re-thread the holes to use different size screws, but if you are that good you don't need to read this. The holes are not spaced equally, so I would recommend using the template. I used another thin piece of paper to duplicate the 4 screw marks just in case I mess up. The two screw holes towards the front are quite close to the front edge of the cabinet. Some molding may get in the way.
Another problem is the provided spacers. The instruction is wrong. It says to use enough spacers to equal the length of the cabinet overhang. It neglected to make up for the depth of the lip of the heat shield, which is ¾ inch. There are barely enough spacers. I ended up using all the small little pieces of spacers to make up the needed length ( manual says you can call to get extra spacers, if you want to wait for the shipment).
Toasting adjustment is very difficult to control accurately. The old unit has ~ 180 degree adjustment for toast darkness. This unit is done by the timer. You only have a ~ 30 degree window for adjustment, anything beyond that is charcoal. The old unit you can leave the same setting all the time. This one you have to adjust every time.
Other than these problems, the unit works fine so far.
