Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker TCM830 10-Cup Thermal Stainless-Steel Coffeemaker

Customer Review: Despite flaws you'll be happy
Summary: 4 Stars

yes there are some minor flaws with this product. For one the manual says don't get the control panel wet. Hello? You are using a product that uses water and things get wet. Secondly DO NOT detach the removalable water tank and fill it and put it back. It has a hole in the top so as you are moving from the sink to the machine you ineviatably spill the water via that hole no matter how careful you are. Again, HELLO? What don't they get about WATER? Leave the cannister attached and bring the water to this. It is easy to fill. Also the screw on lid on the thermos is fussy. Minor points all and things you can get used to. BOTTOM LINE: It makes TERRIFIC coffee. And the thermos keeps coffee warm for a very long time without baking it like the plate warmer types. You don't have to worry about leaving it on. There is nothing on to leave on. You can take the thermos full of hot coffee and place it anywhere you want because it is cool on the outside. It is a melita type coffee dripper so you can still use all those melita filters. This is the first coffee maker that I actually liked, actually thought it made great coffee and did not burn your coffee from sitting on a warmer. It is super easy to clean. The filter chamber slips right out for easy clean up without a mess. You can also use those recyclable metal filters as well. Overall I would give this an 8 out of 10.

Customer Review: Pretty good coffee maker
Summary: 4 Stars

Two inaccuracies in the specs above: 1) The water reservoir IS removable. I hate most coffeemaker pitchers because you can't pour them without spilling, and that's even worse when you have to use the pitcher to put water in the machine. My previous CM had a removable reservoir, and it never leaked or caused any problem, and I don't see any reason to think this one will. 2) The spec says 14 inches high; I thought that would be great because my cabinets are 15 inches above my counter, so it will fit under the cabinet. No. It's actually 15.5 inches tall.

Other than that, no problems. We still have a lifetime supply of round filters, and we've been using them instead of the cone-shaped ones, with no problems at all. The pot pours slowly (like a restaurant carafe), but it doesn't drip or spill. The coffee comes out hot enough to be perfect for almost two hours in the pot, without pre-heating it with hot water.

Another nice feature, the brew basket lifts right out for cleaning, and it's stainless steel like the pot, which makes for an attractive look.

Also, controls are clear and easy. And the coffee comes out just fine.

Not much to complain about. If lightning hit this one and zapped it, I'd buy another one just like it.

Customer Review: Love it except the lid has issues
Summary: 4 Stars

I have owned this model for several years. What I love about it:
* It brews 10 cups very quickly and at the right temperature!
* It soaks all the grinds and doesn't waste any precious coffee
* The coffee stays hot for hours
* The water reservoir is removable and easy to clean
* I use a gold #4 reusable filter and it works great
* The clock/timer is easy to program

What I hate about it...THE LID!
* If you do not seat the pot correctly under the coffee basket it will leak coffee and grinds all over the place and make an incredible mess. I have done this numerous times and so you must be careful each time you are ready to brew. If it's just a little off you will end up with a colossal mess.
* The lid is hard to screw on. Sometimes it takes me several attempts to get the threads right so the lid will screw on...even after owning the darn thing for several years.
* The LID is a royal pain in the a_ _! I hope they redesign the lid.

Customer Review: Rather well-done coffee maker
Summary: 4 Stars

This unit replaced a similar Cuisinart unit which had failed. We were looking for a thermal carafe and 10-cup capacity. Black and Decker seems to have gotten most things right with this unit, such as the removable reservoir and a straightforward design.

Since I grind my own coffee, I found the #4 Mellita-style filters took some getting used to (i.e., getting the grounds into the filter without spillage). Also, the valves on the bottom of the filter bail and the top of the carafe don't slide across each other easily, so some fiddling was necessary until we got used to them.

Perhaps most important (and rarely mentioned in these reviews) is that we chose Black & Decker for its reputation for longevity; When we chose the TCM830, we had in mind an older B&D coffee maker (non-thermal-carafe) from 10 years ago which still works like it did out of the box.

Customer Review: Liked my old Black & Decker better!
Summary: 4 Stars

My old Black & Decker had a thermal caraffe with a glass liner. Wow, the coffee stayed hot for over 24 hours. Unfortunately, the glass liner broke, so I tried this coffee maker. This thermal caraffe is stainless steel and does not begin to do as good of a job at keeping coffee hot. Coffee will be noticeably cooler in 1-2 hours. However, the advantage is that there is no glass liner to break. The swing out basket is a little flimsy and awarkward, and the caraffe does not slide smoothly into place when placing under filter. The coffee pours very slowly, almost at a dribble. I do like the removeable reservoir. This coffee maker is attractive to look at and it takes less counter space than my old one. Overall, this coffeemaker is acceptable, but not as good as the old one.
