Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerCustomer Review: Old Reliable Summary: 5 Stars
Our original model finally wore out after -- I don't know -- at least ten hard working years. It still worked, but the spring clips didn't hold the grill plates anymore and the top wouldn't stand upright. Despite that it still made great waffles. We didn't think twice about buying the same model again. In fact I think this is the same model our parents had, but I believe it was made by General Electric then.
We make waffles often and like to experiment with the ingredients. Regardless of whether they contain nuts, bananas, or berries, they never stick. My wife likes to use the flat surface to make the kind of grill cheese sandwiches where the cheese oozes out. None-the-less clean up is a snap.
Maybe it's my imagination but the new model seems to have a better stick free surface than the old. In any case, it does what it does well and does it as well as its predecessors.
Customer Review: Excellent waffles-a tip for you Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the G48TD based on the positive reviews but I think I can help some of the ones who complained. After treating the waffle plates with cooking oil as directed, I use an extra large spoon to add the waffle mix. I start in the middle and then use the spoon to spread it to about an inch or so of the edges but the next thing I do that's apparently different from others is that I let the waffle sit for about 30 seconds before I close the lid. I've found that when I do that the edges start drying out and form a barrier which keeps the mix from slopping over the side and making a mess when I close the lid. Also, when I check the waffle(after several minutes according to directions)to see if it's ready, I've had no sticking, period. I think this, for the most part, is due to letting it cook a little before letting the lid down. Try it and see if it makes a difference. Regardless, it works for me.
Customer Review: Great for healthy freezer waffles... Summary: 5 Stars
I looked all over locally, after spying this one online, to get a bigger waffle iron to supplement my letter-blocks character waffler. I waited 3 weeks through Amazon directly previously and had cancelled my order. Placed this order and it arrived within days.
I use it every Saturday to make healthy whole-grain waffles for breakfast and to freeze for the school week. With 4 kids, we go through a lot of waffles and peanut butter for easy before-school breakfasts. The waffles come out fluffy and the perfect size for putting in the toaster frozen. Makes multigrain very well. I do brush veg oil on it about every 3rd time as recommended for safe measure and make sure I have enough oil in my recipe. Taking the grids out to wash is sooooo nice. I used the grill side once to make french toast and it turned out wonderfully too. I highly recommend it as a great multi-use appliance.
Customer Review: Oldie but Goodie Summary: 5 Stars
Had the identical grill / waffle maker through the 80's & 90's, loved it! Enclosed waffle recipe made just short of 4 full waffles. Increased ingredients abit thus creating 4 full perfect waffles with no run over. Made bulk waffles and froze. This allowed our boys to pop in toaster and enjoy a hot, nutritious breakfast or snack. Thrilled to have perfect pancakes again too using the combo flip grills.
We used our waffle / grill maker for over 20+ years. The two 'heavy' metal clamps that hold the iron plates in tight, finally wore out causing plate(s) to fall out unexpectedly becoming a possible burn hazard. Loose clamps were the only reason for discarding. Metal clamps on new unit do not seem as heavy. One unit, dual purpose, and easy storage. Would prefer exterior to be brushed stainless steel NOT a shiny surface. Shiny surface, kids, fingerprints - need I say more?
Customer Review: Yum, Yum Waffles Summary: 5 Stars
This is a GREAT waffle iron! We love that it makes the "classic" style waffles. We started with the Toastmaster 2 slice waffle iron, but quickly found out that with a family of 6 it was taking FOREVER!!! This waffle iron cooks our waffles (we mill our own flour) in about 6 minutes and they are Yuuummmy! My kids are always asking for waffles for breakfast and I am happy to oblige! We now operate both and we are eating in less than 15 minutes! SUPER easy to clean thanks to the removable plates -- these really are a MUST have! I've never attempted to touch the top of the grill during cooking, but from the other reviewers, I know that it would be foolish to do so. Anyway, if you are looking for a great, no frills waffle iron that gets the job done and one that you KNOW can be properly cleaned, this is the one for you! Hope this is helpful!
