Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerCustomer Review: Great Waffle Iron! Summary: 5 Stars
When my husband and I got married, I was determined to have a waffle iron like my dad (the designated pancake & waffle-maker in our house) used during my childhood. I couldn't find a waffle iron that made 4 decent-sized squares at one whack. All of the waffle irons we found were either 2-square irons or circle irons that made 4 small wedges. We bought one of the 2-square irons and used it for 7 years. Then, the non-stick on it stopped being non-stick, even when we brushed it with oil or sprayed it with non-stick spray. So, I got on Amazon, and (much to my surprise) I found this wonderful machine. It was almost exactly like the one my dad used to make waffles! It makes great waffles! I like that it has the griddle option on it too, but we haven't used it for that since we already have a griddle. I also like that the plates are dishwasher safe.
It does get HOT HOT HOT! The outside gets super hot! Only touch the black grips! Keep kids (and accident-prone adults) away from this while it is in use and until it cools down.
I highly recommend this waffle-maker, especially to anyone who, like myself, is nostalgic for old-school waffle makers. =)
Customer Review: Just like Mom used to make. Summary: 5 Stars
Yep,If you had one of these grills in the past, then you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Sadly after 30 years in service, my old unit died and was sent to appliance heaven. Since then I've been on a quest to find a replacement for it in ALL my local malls. Let me tell ya folks, I wasted a LOT OF TIME and GAS when I SHOULD HAVE searched right here on Amazon.com for it. In my search to find this grill, I've seen every make and model, and NONE of them impressed me like this unit. It's built to withstand the rigorous of time and, it brings back all those old childhood memories of Sunday morning, when the smell of waffles wafted through the hallways. Yep, this grill makes the best waffles you'd ever want!!! TRUST, I've tried plenty of other griddles but, they just don't compare. Now, if ONLY I could find that syrup that we used to use. I think it was called "Tea Garden Drips"? If you know where I can find this product now, then by all means, send me an email and make my Sunday mornings complete once again. Great Griddle!!......Great Price!! Ciao!!!
Customer Review: Super Waffle Maker Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this B&D model for over 20 years now. It gets pretty heavy use too, at least once a weekend because we're big waffle fans. Add pecans or walnuts or blueberries. It's very reliable and waffles won't stick if you spray the top and bottom teflon with Pam or something similar (just like Waffle House). We don't clean it very much between uses so it stays seasoned like a cast iron griddle, that's the secret. If you put the removable griddles in dishwasher, you have to season the teflon again with lots of Pam. Its almost all made of metal so be careful not to let plastic wrap or your hand touch it when hot. It retains the heat very well since it's heavy. We've served up to 2 dozen waffles during family visits. I'd guess we've made 6000 to 7000 waffles over the last twenty years. Been to friends and relatives houses on vacations and holidays and nothing can beat this maker. Krusteaz Waffle Mix makes the best batter (costs a little more but well worth it). Just remember to spray with oil between batches or it's difficult to remove quickly.
Customer Review: A Great Value that Lasts and Lasts.... Summary: 5 Stars
I have uploaded a picture of our 8 1/2 year old Black & Decker G48TD that was purchased in the summer of 2002, side-by-side with the new replacement I just bought this week. The old one was still working, but the no-stick finish was finally worn through, and what looked like rust was showing.
I am very happy with how long this appliance lasted. We use ours every Saturday morning for either pancakes, waffles, or french toast. That means we used ours more than 400 times.
The new one looks exactly the same...at least I don't notice any design changes.
I like the fact that the G48TD is a waffle maker and griddle in one. It cuts down on the number of small appliances I need.
The no stick finish is actually more like a stick resistant finish. After about 6 months you'll end up needing cooking spray to keep things from sticking. But it works great, and lasts a long time.
In short, I have no trouble recommending this product!
Customer Review: Great iron for the price! Summary: 5 Stars
I read several reviews before the purchase of this waffle iron and the bad reviews helped me as much as the good ones! For those of us looking for our mother's old waffle irons, this is the closest I have found. Her iron was a MESS! Burnt on waffle, rusted pieces here and there, but always nice, clean plates. EASY TO ACHIEVE WITH LOTS OF OIL. If you remember, she did oil constantly (helps with the crispy outside anyway!), NEVER considered cooking anything else on it, and certainly never flipped the plates over. It was just a waffle iron!
I suggest using this JUST as a waffle iron, oiling the plates often, and wiping clean with a damp cloth or paper towel after it cools off. Less is more with these machines... if you insist on using it as a grill as well, you are really messing with the mojo of the waffle iron.
Considering the price, it's a great waffle iron and with the proper TLC, should mimic our mother's fabulous machine.
