Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker

Customer Review: Is it wrong to be in love with a waffle maker?
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had many waffle makers over the years. Some of them made decent waffles, some make horrible waffles. But none made waffles as I remembered as a kid. My mom always had the same waffle maker. She's had it for well over 25 years (I'm 31 and she's had it as long as I can remember.) They always came out perfect. They were the perfect toaster size. They were just perfect.

So when it came time to pick out a Christmas gift, I decided I was going to try to find the waffle maker closest to my mom's. Checking up on Amazon quickly brought this one to light: it's my mom's waffle maker! I'm not sure if it is exactly, but it looks exactly like it and they're both made by Black and Decker. So I put it on my list, and I got it for family Christmas.

This morning I woke up and was excited to try the new waffle maker. I followed the directions, poured in the waffle mix and waited. The light went out, and I opened the lid to find the most perfect waffles I've personally ever made. Perfect color. Perfect size. Perfect everything. When I was done I let the waffle maker cool, took the plates out and washed them... something the other waffle makers didn't even make easy.

It takes an awesome product to get me to write a review. This should be the only waffle maker available on the market. It's all you need.

Customer Review: Best waffle maker so far, and awesome price!

I make protein waffles and freeze them for a quick breakfast. I wanted to find something big, quick, and easy to clean. I'm busy and I don't want to spend forever trying to clean an appliance.

This waffle maker is great for my needs!
PROS:
- You can remove the plates and soak them for easy cleaning
- It has two sides so you can do sandwiches as well
- The plates are non-stick coated so cleaning is even easier (but use something else or it WILL stick)
- It has an adjustable temp. knob
- Makes 4 average sized regular waffles (about 4 or 5 inches)
- Doesn't auto-lock so batter won't go over the sides everywhere if it's homemade with baking powder (they puff up and then fall back down)

CONS:
- The outside is HOT, so watch out if you have curious kids or children
- The non-stick plates collect "gunk" that's hard to remove completely from spraying non-stick spray on them.
- It doesn't open vertical at all so larger sandwiches tend to be pressed at an angle or the bread may slide if there's cheese on it (just turn every so often to help even it out)

Overall I'm really happy with my purchase. The only way it could be better was if it made MORE waffles at a time and didn't collect the goo from the cooking spray.

Customer Review: Does the job, and does it well

This is what I was looking for in a waffle iron:
1) Cooks good waffles
2) Easy to clean
3) Fast

As for #1: waffles come out perfect, no problem. There's a light on the front that comes on, but I ignore that and just use a timer. Seven minutes, and they're perfectly brown.

#2, easy to clean, was my main problem with my last waffle iron. On my old one, you couldn't remove the plates. Inevitably, there would be small spills that would get in the tiny gaps between the plates and the body of the waffle iron, and it would be just about impossible to clean. With this one, the plates pop right out and can be easily washed. Not only that, this one has a better border around the edge of the plates, which means that it's less likely spills even get on to the body.

As for #3, the speed: the iron seems to heat up pretty quickly. No complaints.

I haven't used this as a grill at all, so I can't speak to that.

I don't really have many complaints. The metal body does get hot, but the plastic handles stay cool. It would be nice if there was a latch to keep the lids closed, for storage -- better yet if there was some way to wrap up the cord, as well.

Overall, highly recommended.

Customer Review: Wonderful Waffle Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I have been married for over 30 years and last year the waffle maker that we had received as a wedding gift gave up the ghost! It was a Black and Decker that made 4 small, thin, waffles. We loved it because it was easy to clean, and made waffles that we could freeze, take out of the freezer and pop into the toaster for a quick waffle snack. Well, we looked all over trying to find the same waffle iron and could not find one, so we purchased a Belgian Waffle maker from Crate and Barrel. It was nice, but we did not care for the waffles. They were too thick and the waffle maker was not easy to clean, did not have the griddle feature that our old maker had, and the frozen waffles were too thick for our toaster. After a year of using the Belgian maker, my husband got on the internet and searched for a waffle maker like the one that we had previously. Imagine our delight when he found the exact same item! We ordered it on a Monday night and it was delivered on Wednesday! We love the waffle maker. It is just like the one that we had for 30 years. It is easy to clean, makes perfect waffles and has the griddle feature for grilled cheese. You can't go wrong with this waffle maker!

Customer Review: Exactly What We Wanted
Summary: 5 Stars

After our nearly 13 year old waffle baker finally gave out I hunted high and low for a regular "old fashioned" waffle baker. We settled on a Belgian waffle baker but despite the fact that we couldn't ever get them crispy enough for our taste, it only made one at a time and for our family of five, it just wasn't enough. Not to mention we enjoy doubling or even tripling the batches to toast up later in the week (it's a pain to store or toast Belgian waffles). So we gave a couple store-bought waffle bakers a try and they were awful, completely unable to make a decent waffle.
THIS machine had been in my Amazon shopping cart for over a year and I wish I hadn't waited so long to buy it! Totally worth the $50ish dollars that we paid for it! The waffles come out crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and with so little effort.
Clean up is a SNAP with the griddles being removable (it's recommended not to put in the dishwasher, but with bowls to wash from the batter, we {by we, I mean my husband!} just wash them up at the same time). Since it's arrival just a few weeks ago we've made several batches and it's been great! This one looks like it'll last for many years to come!
