Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker EK700 9-Inch Electric Carving Knife, White

Customer Review: Black and Decker electric knife
Summary: 4 Stars

I have owned this electric knife for over a year now and we use it almost daily. Our first knife was a Presto Pride and we had it for many years before it died. We also own the Presto Pride bread slicing guide. When I looked for a replacement, this knife seemed the closest in description to what we originally owned.

When we used it for the first time, the knife cut just as well as our old one. What I was surprised about was the weight of the knife in my hand. It is much heavier than our first one. It is also "fatter" around and my hand cannot close around the bottom end of it. Luckily, you don't have to hold the bottom, the knife gets skinny enough right near the power button you press.

The Pros: 1. It is still running well after our first year. The weight makes me think that the gears are made of metal and not plastic like some of the other knives. (I cannot verify this as I have not taken my knife apart.)

2. It has a "lock" switch on the power button to keep you from accidently cutting when you are not ready. Both the switch and the button are easily pushed with one finger.

3. It is easily operated by any adult with regular arm strength. No complaints for how it operates.

Cons: 1. It IS heavy! My younger children don't cut the bread because they can't balance the knife with only one hand.

2. The knife blade has an angle in it right where it locks into the handle. I am not sure why the manufacturer decided to put this angle in it, but it makes the length of the knife too short for our bread cutting guide. The blade slips out of the far side of the guide and cuts the bread crooked. Since we still had our first knife blades (Presto), we simply inserted the blades into the Black and Decker handle and "Presto!" (ha ha) the knife works great! It is still sharp and the knife locked smartly into place. It does not jiggle or overheat. It works perfectly every time. We have saved the new knife for when we cut meat or other items.

3. Some might consider this a disadvantage. The power button you press to activate the knife blades is bowed out; it is not flat. Sometimes if my finger is a little moist, the shape makes my finger slip to the bottom of the long button. I got used to it after a while and was no longer afraid that my finger would slip off the button because there is a lip or edge there that catches my finger and stops it from any further slipping.

Overall, it has been a very good replacement. Maybe the manufacturer could lengthen the knife so that it would fit all bread cutting guides. Other than that, we really like it!

Customer Review: Pretty good for its purpose
Summary: 4 Stars

Arthritic hands make for difficult handling of tools. My former electric carving knife works just fine for spouse and grown children, but I was unable to keep it running long enough to make a cut. This implement allows me to depress and keep depressed the cutting trigger. I've carved some fairly tough meats and some very tender cuts. The knife has worked equally well for both. I haven't yet tried it on anything frozen. The blades are easy to attach and detach. They clean easily with a soapy sponge, and have survived the dishwasher well, too.

If I have any complaints, it would be that the knife is rather heavy and my hands tire easily when using it; being tied to a cord restricts its use to the preparation area, rather than the table; and (although I thoroughly understand the reason for it) having to hold down the trigger continuously is tiring. That third reason has no validity . . . if the knife is dropped, it doesn't need to keep cutting anything it comes in touch with!

All in all, this is a very satisfactory tool, especially for persons with problem hands.

Customer Review: Exacly what I needed
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using this knife for almost a year now. It still works like a charm even after hundreds of uses. I do a lot of barbecue from Tri-tips to whole chickens to...

The blades are still sharp and require little effort to cut through even chicken bones. The blades are easily detached with wet/dirty hands while in the process of cooking or doing dishes and can be placed in the dishwasher utensil carriage with no problems.

I would have like a foot or two more on the cord since the one it came with limits me to a certain section of my kitchen counter. It's also a pretty loud knife for being so small.

Customer Review: I wish I had gotten it sooner!
Summary: 4 Stars

I use mine for slicing homemade bread. It does a great job at that and saves my wrist from cramping up. I really haven't put it to the test on anything else so can't comment on its performance at other tasks. If I wanted something to stand up to the wear and tear of cutting meats and such I would invest in a more expensive knife. But for my needs, it works great and the price was just right. I love it and only wish I had gotten it a lot sooner.

Customer Review: Get's the job done!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used the knife three times so far and am pleased with it's performance. My old knife which I had for 20 years was built better than this one so it probably won't last any where as long. And my old electric knife came with two blades, a short and long one. I was disappointed to see only one blade with this knife and that is why I only gave it 4 stars.
