Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker DCM18S Brew 'n Go Personal Coffeemaker with Travel MugCustomer Review: Perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
This has really turned out to be a great little coffee maker. It is small, lightweight, easy to clean, and fast. Nobody in my house drinks coffee but me, so this is perfect. It brews up a decent cup of coffee in about two minutes, and I can take it with me on my way to work. No more wasted coffee! I had to make at least three or four cups in my big coffee maker in order to achieve a good taste, so I am really pleased to get a good flavor in one cup with this machine.
I would like to say that I find the coffee tastes better when I use a paper filter. The permenant filter the machine comes with is fine, but pretty insubstantial. In the same way that coffee tastes better through a heavy duty filter rather than a cheap filter, this machine produces a finer taste when you add a paper filter. I use Melita #2 cone fliters. They fit perfectly in the little basket. The finished product is smoother and tastier.
The mug is okay, kind of cheap looking with an awkward handle, but it serves its purpose. You can always transfer the coffee into your own travel mug if you don't like it.
All in all I am very happy with my little coffee maker. I have put away my monster 12-cupper and will only bring it out again for company!
Customer Review: Simple, convenient, single cup brewer - OUTSTANDING VALUE Summary: 5 Stars
I've bought several of these over the years for myself, my wife, and friends. It works just great but after several years of twice daily brewing, they do wear out. If anything goes wrong before that (say within the first two years?) and Black & Decker does stand behind it. If you call in the problem, they will send you a new one if you mail back the electrical plug from the broken one (it's got a code on one of the prongs so they know how old it is). I've seen some complaints about service from others, but they likely did not buy the machine directly from Black & Decker. If you look closely, several different mail order distributors sell this machine but they won't stand behind them. Nor will Black & Decker. So don't buy from a middleman. Amazon is OK though.
The only other complaint I read about is that the drip basket overflows sometimes. This only happens when you use coffee that is too finely ground (more like powder than sand). That will clog the basket and create the overflow. Normal supermarket canned coffee is fine. I have never had an overflow with regular grinds in over 10,000 cups brewed with this machine over the years. So don't buy this machine if you use finely ground coffee.
Customer Review: Best One-Cup Ever Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my first Brew N Go years ago, and am buying my FOURTH now. It's the best thing that ever happened to my coffee, or my tea for that matter. It brews a great cup of tea, if you put the tea bag directly in the brew basket, and press it down so the exit hole is covered.
I drink one cup of coffee a day. This coffee maker makes a perfect cup every time. Non-coffee drinking people can even do it, which just isn't true with most coffee makers.
I suggest it for any household that likes really fresh coffee, not just one-drinker households, because every cup is hot and fresh. I love that I can make guests their own brewed-to-order cup, stronger or weaker, even use different coffees for different people. Also, it's so much nicer than those machines which require you to use "pods"... what choice in coffee do you have if you have one of those machines? I certainly wouldn't be able to find my organic free-trade coffee in a pod.
I do not use the permanent filter that comes with the machine, I buy #1 unbleached filters at the grocery store. I've never found a permanent filter that made coffee I liked, and unfortunately this one is no exception.
Customer Review: 99% the flavor of a coffee press Summary: 5 Stars
Before I purchased this I was using a coffee press where I boiled water and poured it into a coffee press and let it brew for about 1 1/2 minutes then pressed the coffee grounds down and poured my mug of coffee.
This compact coffee brewer produces coffee than is very very close to the flavor of brewing in a coffee press. The boiling water brews slowly through the coffee and into the mug; and it is easier to clean up compared to a coffee press. I substitute a 15 ounce glass mug for the one included and I use Starbucks coffee. I add my sweetner to my mug and it dissolves into the coffee as it drips into my mug.
Great for one who only wants a single mug of coffee; it will make two cups (7 1/2 ounce size) also.
I get no plastic taste and I do rinse it out thoroughly after each use. You can also use it to make tea by placing your mug with a tea bag in it and having it automatically boil the water and drip it into your mug. Likewise, if you'd like hot cocoa just put your cocoa mix into your cup.
Making one mug at a time means you always will have a fresh cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa. Enjoy.
Customer Review: Brew 'n Go is a Keeper Summary: 5 Stars
This coffeemaker is the perfect size for travel. It saved us on a 7 day cruise we just took. We knew the coffee onboard would be terrible and my husband HAS to have his coffee in the morning. The coffee brewed quickly and we even used it to make hot water for tea. My husband uses "to-go" styrofoam cups with lids instead of the travel mug that comes with the coffeemaker to avoid that "plastic" taste that might occur with hot coffee going into the mug. You don't have to use the travel cup to brew the coffee. My suggestions to B&D: supply #1 filters with the coffeemaker to use in conjunction with the mesh filter already provided. It ensures a better tasting cup of coffee. Include a carry case with the coffee maker. We found a really inexpensive nylon Protege padded carry case at Walmart that we used. The coffeemaker fits in it perfectly and even has room for a container of coffee and a box of filters. If you don't use the travel mug at all when brewing coffee, you have even more room in the carry case. I would recommend this coffeemaker to anyone who travels extensively and wants the luxury of their own coffee while on the road or on vacation.
