Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker CTO6301 Digital Advantage Stainless-Steel 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven

Customer Review: Great product, but hmmm ...
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, what eactly is that 'hmmm' sound coming from this unit whenever it's plugged in? Has anyone else heard it? Appears to be some kind of transformer or power supply humming that energizes the display, which should be the only thing on, when this device is OFF, right? Hmmm....

Aside from this minor annoyance, all I can say is this is a terrific product, replaces my old B&D toaster oven "Dining In" oversized, white unit. The white was looking more yellow than white (due to age & heat), so it was time to upgrade to the new black & stainless look. And look good it does, blending well with other newer appliances. The push button quick settings are awesome, it even sets the appropriate time for perfect toast, bagels, pizza, potatoes, frozen foods, and yes, a 12" pizza will fit comfortably inside. Another great feature, the slide out crumb tray has no edges (where the crumbs invariably get stuck) so this is an easy wipe clean affair. The front glass is convex, along with the rear oven wall, so as to maximize interior volume. The beeps associated with the buttons are a bit loud, so you late night snackers, beware, you will wake up the heaviest of sleepers, and you'll hear "...eating again? Get back to bed!" for sure.

Overall, I am very pleased and recommend it highly. As for reliability ... hmmm .... we'll see ...

Customer Review: Great oven at a great price
Summary: 5 Stars

Like the first reviewer, we also had a bad experience with a lesser model from Black & Decker and were afraid to try another one. Finding her review permitted us to take a chance and boy are we glad we did. This oven has completely lived up to all of its specs: fits a 12" pizza without issue, is great for chicken breasts and breakfast meats, actually toasts toast, and doesnt heat up the whole house like the full size oven. We are particularly happy with how well it does frozen items like tots so quickly with the convection oven. It is very easy to use, but like the original reviewer said it is very loud. It would be great to be able to disable or turn down the audible alarms, but this small thing is well worth dealing with compared to how well it works. We highly recommend this to any family. It is being used nearly every day and we have had it for 3 months now.

It should be noted that the outside does get quite hot, so care has to be taken when this is in reach of a young one. However, from the research we have done, it seems that most of these small tosters do get hot. To avoid this, it seems one has to spend considerably more money.

Customer Review: Better than my full-size oven
Summary: 5 Stars

I read all the reviews, and decided to buy this oven. I had bought what seemed to be a great deal at Macy's, but it was trash and we gave it away within 2 months. Previously, we had had B&D toaster ovens that served the purpose adequately. This oven far, far, far exceeded our expectations. Everything we have tried has turned out great -- crispy things come out crispy without being overcooked. Casseroles come out just like you would expect from a full-sized oven. In my case, much better than my regular oven.

I find that the B&D allows me to cook everything at the temp and time stated in the recipe and it comes out great every time. I strongly recommend this unit.

Several people complained that the outside of the unit gets hot when it is cooking. That is true -- it is an oven. I would not put it where small children can get to it, and would make sure that the cord doesn't rest against the oven. Both of which are basic safety steps you would do with any heated appliance.

Use this oven exactly as you would a full sized oven and expect the same results.

Customer Review: Lots of versatility, spacious, turns out a perfect cookie, too!
Summary: 5 Stars

Short and sweet, this is a terrific little oven when you do not wish to use your regular oven. It is spacious inside, does a commendable job of baking and toasting, and will accomodate my smaller airbake cookie sheets perfectly in the rack slots without having to use the rack in the oven. This method produced perfectly baked cookies, something I have found lacking in other toaster ovens.

The convenience buttons are a no-brainer for my husband to use and get decent results, the traditional functions/controls work well for those more adept at baking and cooking.

The slide out crumb tray is a big improvement over older models that had hinged doors and required hoisting and inverting the oven to clean it out.

The inclusion of a pizza pan is a nice touch, too.

Yes, it is larger than many, but when you want to do more than just toast two slices of bread, it opens up the door for a lot of possibilities. As for the comment about the exterior getting hot... well, yes, it does. After all, it IS an oven, and I've yet to find one that did not.

Customer Review: A very well made and functioning device
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been very pleased with my Black and Decker Toaster Oven - Starship! It has so many functions - I hardly use them all. It has been in use now for over a year and I use it approx 4 times a week. The timer and convection functions make this unit so complete at such a decent price point. There is nothing about this unit that has concerned me - I use it for english muffins (pizza muffins), frozen chicken and fish products, and refridgerated chicken. Now the only thing I have to say about my personal use is that I don't push it to the max. I don't have it going for hours a day. I basically use it max at about a half hour to 45 minutes a day, four times a week. Any long term cooking (like steaks, raw foods), I use my regular oven. It's just common sense to me. I don't tend to overuse anything. I instead, spread the jobs around - that way, I put even wear on everything and nothing is overused. So - I can't tell you that this unit will work flawlessly if you use it for so many hours a day / seven days a week. Hope this has been helpful.
