Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker CTO6301 Digital Advantage Stainless-Steel 6-Slice Convection Toaster OvenCustomer Review: Awesome convection oven if you want to ditch your range oven Summary: 5 Stars
As most of you have or will find, a convection oven can easily be used in place of your range oven...and it will save about half on your electric bill; HOWEVER, it can only save you money if you use it; and the more you use it in place of a range oven the more it saves you on your electric bill. As we've owned a myriad of convection ovens very few of them would fit a 13x9 pan; and while we could retrofit food into other smaller sized pans...we've somehow never wanted to. Our little dysfunction I suppose.
If you are interested in why there is saving on your electric bill, please read this paragraph otherwise skip to the next. A typical electric bill charges residential electric usage in Kilowatt hours....or simply 1000 watts per hour of use. A typical range oven uses 3000 watts v.s. a convection oven using at most 1500 watts of power. And a convection oven typically has to heat a smaller space as it is only fractions as large as your range oven. Sometimes people try and convince you incorrectly that a range oven using 240 volts is somehow more efficient than a convection oven using only 120 Volts, but that is mostly nonsense. That is like saying a car that goes 100 miles per hour goes farther in 100 miles than a car going 30 mile per hour. They go the same distance and the electric company charges you in Kilowatt hours. A kilowatt hour is always 1000 watts regardless if it's delivered at 240 volts or 120 volts.
This is the best convection oven we've owned so far as it fits many "handle-less" 13x9 pans. Inside it measures 13-7/8" wide, 12" deep, and 7" tall. Outside dimensions are 19-3/8" wide, 13-1/2" deep, 10-3/8" tall. And if the edges of your pan happened into fit the grooved sides that accommodate the included wire rack...then you would have 14" of width available to you. So you can see that it will fit many 13 x 9 pans and/or muffin pans. If I recall this unit also includes a broiling pan.
As far as even heating is concerned...this unit heats evenly with its quarts elements; two on top and two on the bottom depending if you are baking or broiling etc. We've baked and cooked everything from brownies, cookies, pork roasts, and everything in between. Everything comes out perfectly as expected. The convection function is engaged manually by a separate button on the front panel and is only available with the bake option. We do not use convection very often as it cooks so well with out it. We did slightly burn the top of brownies one time with convection...likely we should have slimmed down the cooking time as the oven's directions suggested; however, we find baking cookies, brownies works easiest for us with no convection.
The outside of this unit does get hot to the touch as do most convection ovens...but given it's relative small outside and large inside dimensions we love it regardless. The handle has never gotten unusually hot as another reviewer commented. Warm, but never uncomfortable or hot to the touch.
The temperature and time controls are set like many most newer digital controlled (no round knobs) oven type cooking appliances...1st you choose bake, broil, toast, etc. from the buttons, then you set the temperature via the up/down arrows and LCD display, then you set the time using the up/down arrows and LCD display , and lastly press the start button.. The oven now preheats (lcd display blinks "pre heat) and beeps when the desired temperature is reached (Super convenient). You can adjust both the time/temp during cooking if you need as well.
This unit preheats quickly. After preheating is completed, the unit LCD display toggles between the temperature and the time remaining on the timer. Once the cooking time has elapsed, the unit beeps loudly and the heating elements turn off. Also, there is a nice blue light that is super visibly on from across the room while the unit is cooking.
This unit is fairly inexpensive, cooks superbly, has been very reliable so far, and truly is an option to using your range oven.
By the way, we never use our convection oven for 2 slices of toast as a toaster is typically much faster and more efficient at toasting 2 slices of bread...or 4 slices if you have a 4 slice toaster. We do have an awesome stainless single slot, 2-slice toaster that takes up almost no counter space. Best toaster we've ever had... Search Brand: Haier and model: TST120SS.
Anyway, we love this black and decker convection oven. Best of luck.
