Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker CO85BM Spacemaker Can Opener, Black/Brushed MetalCustomer Review: Not as good as the old B&D Spacemaker Can Opener Summary: 3 Stars
We had one of the older white B&D Spacemaker can openers for about 15 or 20 years. It worked great and could be mounted on flat bottom cabinets or recessed bottom cabinets. We recently built a new house which has all stainless appliances. We bought this new B&D Spacemaker Can Opener because it matched our new appliances. Our new cabinets have recessed bottoms (as did our old ones). The old spacemaker can opener could be mounted flush with the bottom front edge of the cabinet. As others have said, this new can opener cannot be mounted flush with the front of the cabinet if you have recessed bottoms on your cabinets, because the lever will hit the cabinet. I solved this problem by mounting the can opener 3" back from the front of the cabinet. That way, the lever can be raised fully. I admit that it would be better to have the can opener flush with the front of the cabinet, but at least it works this way. If you have flat bottom cabinets, you could mount it flush with the front of the cabinet. The lever does seem to fall off more easily than our old can opener if you raise the lever too far. Other than that, the can opener seems to work fine. We can't find any other black and stainless under-the-cabinet can openers, so we will probably stick with this one. I think Black & Decker needs to change their mounting design back like the older models, so they can be mounted flush with the front of recessed bottom cabinets or flat bottom cabinets.
Customer Review: OK Summary: 3 Stars
Bought this to replace an old black and decker under the cabinet opener.
We couldn't use the same holes we had to drill new ones. I doesn't close up like the older one. It doesn't open cans as nicely. It leaves quite a jagged edge on the cans so you have to be cafeful. I have not had any problem with it opening cans and it works on any size. I wish B & D would have kept with something closer in style to the old design. It would have been nice not to have to drill more holes in the underside of my kitchen cabinets.
Customer Review: Just A Can Opener Summary: 3 Stars
This Item is not as good as the one (15 years old) it replaced. It's mounting is not as good, requiring you to use plastic spacers instead of hea metal plate that the unit slides in and locks. It also cuts a lot slower (gear) is smaller. Leaves jaggered edges on top piece it cuts. It works. I don't believe it'll last have as long. I'd recomend it for the price.
Customer Review: Spacemaker Can Opener Summary: 3 Stars
This product pretty much met my expectations. I assumed from the description there would be more brushed metal on the unit (there is only a narrow band across the middle, otherwise all black plastic). Speed of operation is slower than anticipated or seen in other models. The unit came with good instructions and parts to support the undercounter installation.
