I chose to get this size anvil even after all of the books that I had read and jewelry artists recommended the much smaller 2 and a half inch model. I don't know why. I would be irritated with one that small. I like to have room to do anything that I can think of without worrying about being centered on a small surface. I also sit mine on top of a piece of velour fabric. My desk is wood and that has kept me from scratching it. It also helps with the sound a bit. This item came in several dollars less then others in my internet search. I am new to making wire jewelry and was surprised by the selection of tools Amazon provided. Always check Amazon first, regardless of your needs--if they don't have it they will find it for you.
