Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bartelt Cookbook StandCustomer Review: A great stand -- cookbooks, a cook's Kindle support and more Summary: 5 Stars
My son gave me this very useful cookbook stand last year, and after 12 months of experience, I would like to join the chorus of praise contained in the other Reviews here. It holds most cookbooks flat, the cover protects the pages, it's easy to clean and very stable in use, it's beautiful -- in short it does its job very well indeed and looks good doing it.
The only negative is that the cover is not wide enough to completely cover many cooking magazines and larger books, but careful positioning usually works well enough. Besides, a few splatters makes me feel like a real cook.
I'm an intermediate cook with some basic training at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, and have used a slow cooker for over six years with great success. Recently we purchased a Kindle, primarily to use when reading aloud to my wife. Amazon offered a free Kindle copy of the Kindle version of Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Entertaining (it's still free as of this writing!)
I have used both the soft cover and the Kindle versions of the book (see my Review at the Kindle version), and have found the Bartelt Cookbook Stand very useful with both versions.
Here are a few other comments on using the Kindle for cooking.
One big positive: you can take the Kindle to the store and use it to find ingredients -- if there is a special, it is very handy to have an easy source to find other ingredients to make the dish. You can also make a shopping list using the note function while reading recipes; the last time I took out my Kindle to check my shopping list, I gained an instant audience of other shoppers.
It's easy to keep a Kindle clean while cooking; put it in a one gallon Ziplock bag, and close the sealer top. Easy to read and use the keys and no spices, flour or flying oil or water to muck up the electronics. (This works for reading in the bathtub as well.)
I've trained myself to never try to catch anything that falls in the kitchen. The CIA instructors emphasized that trying to catch a falling knife is fraught in too many ways to mention. So be very careful to keep your Kindle in a safe location; the Bartelt Cookbook Stand is very secure and can be easily adjusted to the correct angle to avoid glare from the overhead lights. (Don't put the Kindle under the cover that comes with the Stand; it's too hard to lift it off to make notes, change pages, etc. -- the Ziplock bag works great and allows one to push the buttons as necessary.)
The Kindle cooking experience would be greatly improved if you could toggle between two or more pages of a book. That way you could compare two different recipes for the same basic dish, or between a recipe and the front matter dealing with specific techniques, for example. I'm experimenting with creating notes and/or bookmarks improve the experience. More anon! In the meantime, this Stand makes it safer to use the Kindle in cooking.
Paper or Kindle -- a great cooking aid.

PS: Ah, the "and more" in the heading. I use the stand to hold books and my Kindle next to my exercise equipment; it works just as great down there and fits on the bookshelf either in the kitchen or in the basement. B.
