Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back to Basics TEM500 Egg-and-Muffin 2-Slice Toaster and Egg Poacher

Customer Review: Mom's breakfast at home... no nagging included! LOL!
Summary: 5 Stars

As a young man that just moved outta the "nest" so to speak, I have got to say that this toaster is really a godsend... It makes the toast, the egg and the sausage or bacon!

Some people may say that it replaces all the pans and is effortless but it also, in my case, replaces the mother who normally would make the food! Not saying a material item is more valuable than a person by any means, I love my mom, but now i get a wholesome breakfast even more often than I did before!

This thing has easy written all over it, you just measure the water with the included cup, (depending on how you like your eggs and yes you can make scrambled) grab some precooked meat out of the freezer, pop in the bread and press a button. Cleanup is easy, just rinse and dry everything off and put it back on. I spray some cooking oil in the pan so the egg doesn't stick but even when I forget its still simple to clean.

I really really love this toaster/egg/meat maker, my only complaint is that sometimes it will get the toast done too early making the bread hard but when you put the egg and meat on it warms it right up so its not a big deal at all.

If your looking to replace your toaster or buying your first one... this is it!

Customer Review: I'm SOOO glad I found this
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband LOVES this thing. And so do I because I no longer have to clean up his pans from when he makes an egg sandwich.

It shipped fast (we had it on the third business day - and we live in Hawaii) and it works like a charm. It's easy to use once you've read the instructions (if you don't take a few minutes to read them, it's your own fault if you ruin your new toy). Poached eggs come out perfect for sandwiches. Our toaster works fine (we didn't have to slide the toaster bit to the end for well-toasted bread. Right out of the box the parts do smell a bit plasticky (or at least they smell "newish") but we washed them by hand and made our first sandwich eagerly. It did give off a slight plasticky smell when it heated up, which went away after the first use; our first sandwich did not taste like the "new" smell. The whole thing doesn't get hot at all like I thought it would - just a little warm.

Overall, I'm so thrilled with this purchase (my husband lets me know daily how much he loves this). It looks superb on our counter (granted it's a tad larger than most toasters, but it's not huge) and makes sandwiches so fast (4 minutes!) and easy with almost no mess (the lack of cleaning on my part is the thing I love the most).

Customer Review: Great Gadget for Breakfast Lovers!
Summary: 5 Stars

Breakfast with no dishes! Need I say more? Well I will say a litle. I am not a kitchen gadget person and own as few appliances as possible. That being said I absolutely LOVE this little gadget. Egg McMuffins made to order while you get ready in the morning - they always come out great. I scramble my eggs and sometimes use egg beaters, my husband poaches, we generally use canadian bacon for meat. Eggs come out perfect everytime. Have had no problem with the non-stick coating, it is not showing any wear after more than twenty sandwiches. Easy to clean, easy to keep from getting dirty.

Water from the steaming and the ham does collect on the egg, we just "drain" it on the meat warming tray before putting it on the sandwich, no problem there.

**One note: this does not bother me as I rarely make toast but the toaster seems to brown more on one side than the other when toasting bread. Have had no problems with english muffins and bagels, though.

Great machine, convenient, looks nice on the counter and cleans very easily. I highly recommend it to those who like breakfast sandwiches and often find themselves at the drivethrough. Tastes better, healthier, and costs less.

Customer Review: My Favorite Toaster
Summary: 5 Stars

With nearly 250 reviews earning an average of nearly 5 stars, I have to agree with all the satisfied customers that this toaster is an excellent device for both bread and egg cooking!

My roommates owned one and once I learned how to use it, I made use of it often. They joked how I would end up buying one of my own when I moved out and it arrived in the mail a few days ago. =)

A tip to keep in mind is to always put some non-stick cooking spray in the mini frying pan otherwise the egg will stick.

To summarize a few key points made by many other reviewers, it easily poaches and hard boils eggs in a variety of softness levels. The toaster works as expected and the toaster overall is an easy clean. The only exception to this is the heating plate under the egg pan. Using tap water will develop some mineral deposits or hard water stains over time. It doesn't detract from the functionality of the product but defiantly pulls it away from looking new or clean.

Overall, with its recent price drop from $50 to $30 it is a competitive option against most other 2 slice toasters. I think you will be happy with the convenience and nifty feature set of this toaster.

Customer Review: Works as described with caveat
Summary: 5 Stars

Other reviews are more comprehensive so won't repeat the good points.
It IS nice to have everything made, together, automatically!
A real crowdpleaser when family visits (it's magic! ha!)

However, I found that the bottom stainless steel heater pan (below the egg steamer tray) stained and burned on first use & I had to use an SOS pad to clean it up.
Thinking that I needed to add more water than instructed, I have done so ever since, and this minor adjustment seems to keep it clean. Be sure to add at least as much water as recommended, and you'll likely avoid this situation.

Another caveat: If your 'egg cracking style' is like mine (sadly inelegant!), you may well drip a bit of the egg white into all of the parts of the steamer stack while adding the egg to the poacher tray. This results in a bit of cooked egg white laminating itself to the different parts. Not earth-shaking, or difficult to clean up, but does mandate more cleanup than if not.
Either be mindful and precise while adding the egg to the tray, or crack the egg into the poacher tray (when it's on the counter) and THEN carefully transport it and add it to the stack.
