Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back to Basics TEM500 Egg-and-Muffin 2-Slice Toaster and Egg PoacherCustomer Review: Finally...A McDiet McMuffin! & 11 Month Update!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was not totally sure if I would like this little gizmo...even with all the positive reviews, but ordered it as a Christmas gift to my husband and me "From Santa". We both like Sausage Egg & Cheese McMuffins, but curtailed our consumption after reading the Nutritional and Calorie (OUCH!!) content. Sigh. Then I saw this online and ordered it on the 18th of December thinking "NO WAY in time for Christmas". Well, it was wrapped and under the tree on the 21st. THANKS AMAZON! I had stocked up beforehand with light English muffins (80 cal), Jimmy Dean Turkey sausage (80 cal), Non-fat cheese slices (30 cal) and low cholesterol (real) eggs (still 80 cal). So a total of 270 cal/9 gm fat (approx)... WAY less than the 450 cal and 27 gm of fat packed by the real McCoy. Next time I will try Eggbeaters and drop calories/fat/cholesterol even more. OH YES! The finished Low Cal/Low Fat product was a GREAT SUCCESS! The pans were easy to clean, so this is an easy way to add variety to our breakfast without breaking the bank on our daily calorie allottment.
11 Month Update:
Still Works GREAT! We have tried the eggbeater-type egg substitutes with great success!
Back to Basics TEM500 Egg-and-Muffin 2-Slice Toaster and Egg Poacher
Customer Review: Ingenious Device Summary: 5 Stars
The Back to Basics is an excellent value, and is actually a very functional kitchen gadget that will get more use than your food processor! I am surprised it doesn't have an infomercial.
Some of the other reviewers wrote about the quality of the small appliance, which is in fact part plastic. That was our only concern in purchasing this toaster/breakfast sandwich maker. However; it does everything that it is supposed to do. And we enjoy using it one or two times each morning to make a to-go breakfast for our commutes.
The system properly cooks meat and eggs, ending with perfectly toasted bread. Cooking time is adjusted by the amount of water used. We find that the suggested guidelines work just fine. We have done a little experimenting with the meat in particular. It is great for sausage and Canadian Bacon.
How long will it last? I would say that a year or two is reasonable for the quality/price. I am not saying that it is cheaply made, just that it is not as heavy duty as some of the more expensive brands. When compared to getting a breakfast sandwich or two at about $3-$4 each, it paid for itself in about two weeks.
For the money, we find it to be an ingenious device, and a great value that makes getting out the door easy and efficient.
Customer Review: B2B fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
This toaster/poacher/steamer is FABULOUS! I've only had it a month so I don't know about durability in the long haul, but it's already been worth it. I knew about the "McMuffin" function from a relative and love how easy it is to create all types of poached/bread/meat sandwiches but what I didn't expect was the egg "boiling" function (really it steams them, fast too). I'm not a morning person so I leave as little time as possible to get ready for work and being able to put in a couple (up to 4!) eggs to boil then ignore it til I'm on my way out the door and take them to work for morning snack/breakfast is amazing. Sure boiling eggs on the stove is easy but you have to pay some attention and it takes 20 minutes. This machine is total autopilot AND they come out perfect every time. They even pop out of the shell super easily. I've lost 10 pounds by bringing a morning protein snack to work which motivates me the rest of the day. I don't care if it only lasts a year, I'll keep buying new ones. And I'm told you can get replacement nonstick egg pans anyway now too. If you want fast, super-easy and delicious you just can't go wrong with this. I generally am too lazy to write reviews but this product deserves major kudos. It seems like such a gizmo but it really does work.
Customer Review: Yum! Who doesn't like toast? And who doesn't like eggs? Summary: 5 Stars
Obviously this is a very specific-oriented appliance, but what's so nice about it is that it does all the cooking for you. Toast and eggs get done at the same time. Perfect! The eggs turn out really nice, too. Bought this for my daughter for Christmas because she and her dad have found cooking a fun thing to do together. It's not complicated. It gives your kids some skill in doing something with an appliance aside from a regular breakfast routine of grabbing a pre-made cereal bar or Pop Tart. This doesn't turn out a food product that really goes out of style. Eggs truly are good for you, in moderation, and sometimes a nice alternative to a bowl of cereal.
I've seen other reviews where they say the Teflon on the egg pan flakes right away. I wonder if these people followed the directions by spraying the pan with a non-stick spray? Regardless, it sounds like even if the Teflon flakes, you're left with a metal pan anyway and all you have to do is flake off the remaining Teflon and just cook the eggs without the Teflon. No biggie!
You also can scramble the egg in case you don't like a poached egg on your toast or bagel or English muffin. You have choices. Go dry your hair or shave your stubbley face while this thing cooks for you.
Customer Review: Yeah, it's gimmicky...but COOL! Summary: 5 Stars
Update: Just wanted to update to say that mine is still going strong with ZERO issues. I'm so crazy about this machine, I bought one for my mom for her birthday because I knew she'd love it, but would never buy one for herself. She's having a ball with it! I know others have posted that theirs quit on them, but I've seen no signs of a problem with mine.
Original review:
Okay, I admit it: I am an appliance junkie. I SWORE I wouldn't buy another appliance, but this one really intrigued me. I love Egg McMuffins, but never have time to stop at Mickey D's. Plus, I prefer multi-grain or whole-grain muffins. This thing is fantastic! I have to eat a lot of protein, so I use it almost every day for breakfast. I've had not one single problem with it, either. It's very easy to clean, everything is always cooked to perfection and is all done at the same time, and it's so simple! The parts are top-rack dishwasher safe, so I just pop them in the dishwasher when I do my dishes at night. I use frozen fully-cooked sausage patties(Schwann's sausage is THE best) or slices Canadian bacon, regular ol' eggs, and store brand non-stick spray; it all comes out just perfectly every single time. I'm sure I really didn't NEED this, but I sure am enjoying the heck out of it!
