Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back To Basics Apple And Potato PeelerCustomer Review: Great peeler and spiral slicer Summary: 5 Stars
These are sold under a number of names and different prices . The one I have has the clamp and the suction cup both but I don't really use the clamp . They work great and you can get replacement cutters if needed (I haven't needed one after three years though) . It spiral slices the apple, while while peeling and coreing it, or you can drop the blade to the side and peel only . Want spiral French Frys it will do it but you will have a core that has to be hand sliced or long sliced with another cutter . Beats paying $200 + for a hand cranked spiral French Fry slicer though . The only problem I have had is if the apple is too ripe and soft then the center prongs can twist out . I also have a small electric peeler for Apples, Potatoes, etc but it won't core or spiral slice so I then use this when I want to do that . I love this thing and for an old hard to please guy that's saying a lot .
Customer Review: Wonderful item Summary: 5 Stars
A couple of years ago, we have started canning various items. Last year we turned to fruit. Peeling and coring by hand last year was tedious. All of that came back to me this year, as we began the process anew. Thinking there had to be a better way, I went online and began exploring the alternatives. I found that this peeler/corer had generally excellent reviews and I decided to give it a try. For our purposes, it worked wonderfully. It is a well-designed and manufactured item. Then, a couple of weeks ago, we decided to help out a 4-H club in the Virginia Piedmont in their annual making of apple butter. When we got there, I noticed that they were using 8 of these items and found them to be excellent in peeling and coring the 50 bushels of apples that went into the apple butter. So, they are multi-year kid-tested, as well.
Customer Review: I can't believe how well this works Summary: 5 Stars
I really debated purchasing this peeler. Though the reviews were pretty good I thought it was going to be just another kitchen gadget that didn't get used much.
Well, if you make anything in the fall with apples-treat yourself to this well made item. While I don't need it for the applesauce I make (I cook them down whole and use the Kitchenaid food strainer attachment) it was an amazing timesaver when making apple pie filling.
I literally peeled and cored 10 pounds of apples in minutes. And dare I say that it IS fun! My husband also helped out for the same reason.
I also have a dehydrator and it makes perfectly uniform slices for that purpose-and cores it at the same time.
So even if I only use this a few times a year-I am very glad I have it for those occasions!
Customer Review: Great time saver! Summary: 5 Stars
I too have had one of these for years, and can't do without it. It saves about 20 minutes for every apple pie I make. Just rinse the apple and load with the core lined up with the mechanism. The suction cup really sticks the mechanism to the counter top, and the mechanism does its job with just a few spins of the crank. There is very little wasted apple when this thing is done peeling/coring/slicing. It leaves just a bit of skin at the very top and bottom of the apple, but I don't mind cutting that bit off the spiral and munching it (the apple comes out in one big spiral, like a slinky.) Cleanup is very easy too. Rarely, it needs a little hand-holding to start peeling a really huge apple, but then finishes just fine. The nieces and nephew all fight to use it. Now I'm buying one for sis (their mom.) Worth every penny!
Customer Review: How did I live without it?? Summary: 5 Stars
This gadget has got the be the coolest thing I have bought for my kitchen in years (and I buy A LOT of things for my kitchen)! We are getting ready to make apple butter for the first time (my husband misses his grandmother's homemade apple butter from PA) and I wasn't looking forward to peeling, coring, and cutting bushels of apples. I saw this and figured it was worth the money to save my sanity! We got it last night and grabbed a few apples to test out... it works PERFECTLY! Even the kids are able to use it with no problems. They were all sitting at the table with their own apple cut into a spiral in minutes. AMAZING! My husband is excited... now not only will he get his apple butter, but I will bake apple pies a lot more often!
***by the way... I got mine from amazon @ acehardware. Much cheaper price.
