Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back To Basics Apple And Potato PeelerCustomer Review: Great Little Apple Peeler / Corer / Slicer! Summary: 5 Stars
Years ago, my Mom gave me a clamp-style apple peeler that I eventually donated to a thrift store. It was cumbersome and involved way too much effort to set up and operate. So, I thought all apple peelers were pretty much useless until my friend insisted that I try her Back to Basics model to make homemade applesauce. After using hers, I went out and bought one just like it at Williams & Sonoma. I spent nearly $30 for it. It's a great little gadget and I love it! I was shocked at how quickly and easily I was able to peel, core, and slice pounds upon pounds of small Jonathan apples. There's either a little waste or a little hand peeling to be done on the ends, because the peeler stops just short of the tip of the apple. But wow, what a time saver, and its simplicity makes it fascinating to operate! The suction bottom is simple to adhere to a countertop. The small size makes it easy to tuck away until I need it again. One hint: wash it immediately after using, to avoid dried apple juice in its parts. The instruction manual says to put a drop of vegetable oil on moving parts...I haven't done that yet, but I'm sure it's good advice.
Customer Review: Works perfectly Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second purchase of this product. I used the first one 20+ years and recently gave it to my daughter who packs apple slices for the Grands lunch. She soaks them in pineapple juice and they stay beautiful and taste wonderful even the next day or two. I replace the one I gave to her as soon as I returned home. This apple peeler makes peeling, coring and slicing apples so easy and fast. It works well only with firm apples of medium size. I choose the ones that are symmetric as the core will be removed perfectly. I also use the apple slices in my dehydrator and the slices are perfect for that. This product is well made and my old one went through many years of continuous use and performed beautifully. It is so easy to use that all 6 of the grandchildren use it with perfect results. The trick is using firm apples. I've never used it to peel potatoes, but if i did i would choose very smooth medium size realizing there would be areas to trim out with a paring knife due to the nature of a potato, which may not be worth the time. I love this product and will replace this one in 20 years without hesitating.

IT takes a little while to get used to it and you have to anchor it solid on the table. This product is well made and my old one went through many years of continuous use and performed beautifully. Back To Basics Apple and Potato Peeler
The last time I peeled an apple for my husband I about cut off my finger, and stated I am never peeling another apple for anyone over 3 years old again.
I bought this peeler AND corer for my husband and it works! It's heavy duty cast iron, and has a strong suction grip to the counter (no scratching the surfaces with clamps). It's quick, and fun. It's easy to clean. My grandkids and I have made 2 pies, and 4 brown bettys and many, many apple snacks since we've had it.
I am not having as much luck with the potatoes.
But it is certainly a worthy tool for the kitchen, and I am not a gadget person. It is made exceptionally well and should last many years. It makes for quick work, and the curly slices go over well with young ones.
I guess the best testimonial is this: I hadn't made an apple pie in 15 years until we got this gadget!
Customer Review: Must have for anyone with braces! Summary: 5 Stars
I used mine for the first time tonight and was amazed at how well it works. It has a little bit of a learning curve...basically it takes an apple or two to figure out you just have to let the gadget do it's thing without trying to force anything. In a matter of seconds you have a peeled, cored, slices apple. I had braces put on my teeth about a year and a half ago. I haven't really eaten many apples since biting into something fleshy is uncomfortable and generally means that I'll be pickin' stuff out my "grill" for the next two hours. This little gizmo makes it so I can be lazy AND still eat apples! Score! Oh yeah, it only took 15 minutes to figure out how it worked and prep 8 apples for a pie tonight. The pie cooked way more evenly since all of the apple pies were uniform in size. Can't say enough great things. I wouldn't necessarily buy it on Amazon though. I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond for $19.99 + tax...but no shipping so it's still cheaper.
