Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Avery Dennison The Original Buttoneer Fastening SystemCustomer Review: Unusual use for this product, Berber Carpet Repairs! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to state right off the bat that "I have never used this product to put a button back on." I just whip out needle and thread. I am not the handiest person, but heck, anyone can sew a button on, and really doesn't take long at all.
Anyway, when we first moved into our new home, I locked our cats in an upstairs bedroom and bath area so there would be no chance of them escaping with the movers going in and out so much. I went upstairs a few hours later to let them out and opened the door to find that they had ripped into the Berber carpet trying to basically dig their way out of the room by going under the door. If you know the kind of Berber I have, it unravels when it gets snagged, kind of like womens stockings. There were 3 and 4 inch strands of carpet just hanging on for dear life, and bald lines where the carpet strands had been. It looked horrible. I tried all sorts of ways to repair it, knitting needles, glue, embroidery needles, curved needles. The problem was that I couldn't get to the underside of the carpet because, of course, it is tacked down to the floor. I kept wracking my brain, and the carpet places all told me I would have to have it patched. Not cheap and worse yet, the patch would be visible.
In desperation I went to a sewing goods store, saw this and figured I'd give it a try. It worked like a charm. I twist the carpet strands and tuck them down into the bald line and then tack it down every 1/2" or so with the Buttoneer. It kind of reweaves it in, if that makes sense. The real test though was "Would it stand up do wear and tear, and even more worrisome, Vacuuming?" Well, it has been 7 years, and every area I have ever worked on has held like a champ. Those little plastic fasteners are tough. Best of all, no one has ever even noticed. It didn't even take very long. To this day when I get the occasional pull or snag on the carpet I just whip the Buttoneer out and it is fixed in no time. It is my all time favorite "off label use" for any product I own.
My best friend has even had me come over and fix her carpet after her kids snagged it and pulled a few good long strands on it.
I have never had the needles break on me, and that is with me sticking them through carpet backing. I have had mine 7 years, so I'd say I got my money's worth and then some. I can see how the holes that it makes in your fabric might be a bit big depending on the weave, so it may not be the ideal solution for every garment. Well, after seeing many reviews for the Buttoneer here that weren't 5 star, I figured I would have to share my experience with it. Hope it helps someone. Thanks for a great product that has really saved me a small fortune over the years. The cats say "Thank You" too!
