Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Litter Kwitter Toilet Training System

Customer Review: Worth the $50
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second toilet training kit I've purchased, and while I was skeptical about spending $50 on it (probably made out of 30c in plastic) it is definitely going to work.

My cat is beyond stupid, so it will probably take another couple of months, but the Litter Kwitter is made out of very sturdy plastic, and definitely won't bend under any cat's weight.

My first toilet trainer was made of flimsy plastic; barely more than a plastic film (I've had sturdier packaging on cheap headphones). The trainer was destroyed the moment my cat first set foot in it, and there was a slow demise that followed, dumping loads of litter into my toilet.

I tried making my own toilet trainer with a few thin planks of wood, a couple of metal hangars, and a disposable plastic food container, and it successfully trained my (again, incredibly stupid) cat to use the toilet, but she refused to use it without the trainer.

The key is to have a gradual process where you can reduce the litter in the toilet little by little to ease the cats into feeling comfortable. Cats are unreasonably particular about where they'll go to the bathroom, so a familiar scene is extremely important.

This trainer comes as pictured (minus cat) with the 3 colored trays. All are at least 1CM thick and made out of very sturdy plastic. The white tray is strong, and comes with detachable clips to make the tray fit on the rim of your toilet snugly (or to be removed if you have a wider toilet).

After 3 months of building my own trainers and working with my cat, this is exactly what I would have built, had I the ability to create plastic shapes like this.

If you're considering toilet training your cat (I recommend it) and you have the patience to move the trainer to use the toilet (we only have one toilet - it's not a big deal) I highly recommend just sucking it up and spending the $50 to get the Litter Kwitter. It is well designed, well built, has extra rings in case your cat is too nervous about the bigger steps from red to orange to green, and if you consider the cost of litter, in a few months you'll save more on NOT buying litter than you will have spent on training your cat.

2 months of patience and you can be litter/smell free (at least in the cat's department), and you will save hundreds of dollars a year you would otherwise spend on buying litter.

Final thoughts: Even if you normally buy the ultra cheap litter for your cat, ABSOLUTELY make sure you buy good litter for the toilet trainer. I can imagine nothing worse than having to clean a pee-saturated pan every day. Good clumping litter isn't terribly expensive (I got 39lbs in a bucket for like $15), you go through it much more slowly, because you only need to dispose of the soiled litter, and you will save yourself a LOT of unhappiness when it comes to cleaning the toilet trainer (which has to be done daily - but it's not a big deal because it's usually just one poop or pee clump that you can scoop out with a piece of toilet paper over your hand).

Buy the Litter Kwitter, train your cat, clean the kit, and re-sell it on craigslist for $40.
