Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of American Weigh Signature Series Black AWS-100 Digital Pocket Scale, 100 by 0.01 GCustomer Review: Great deal and excellent accuracy for reloading Summary: 5 Stars
I read the negative review regarding the accuracy not being good enough for reloading use. I use this scale and the 0.2 grain error is no problem. Let me explain how I use this and this method should be used with any scale. With something as serious as measuring gunpowder into cartridges, I never trust any scale so I verify the measurement in this way. Let's say I need 6 grains of powder. I set the powder measure up to throw a single 6 grain charge as measured with this scale. That could actually be 5.8 to 6.2 grains which is unacceptable. I then throw ten charges and measure that. I should read around 60 grains but now the error range is 59.8 to 60.2 or 5.98 to 6.02 per single charge. I make slight adjustments to the powder measure device until 10 charges is equal to 60 grains. I am now within .02 grains per charge which is highly acceptable. The scale has performed flawlessly for me and I use it exclusively instead of my RCBS analog scale. I have also made comparison measurements with this and the RCBS with no appreciable difference between the scales. When used properly, the limitations of this ( or any) scale can be improved simply by utilizing a different method. Overall, this is a great deal for the price.
Customer Review: If you are buying silver coins, this is a MUST purchase FIRST! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this scale(silver/gray version) because it seemed like a reasonable price.
I bought this for Silver coins purchases.
See, silver coins tend to wear with heavy circulation. So weighing junk silver coins before making and offer is a MUST. (EG: Silver dimes can lose over 0.1 grams due to circulation.)
A non-circulated silver dime should weigh 2.5 grams, a heavily circulated silver can easily only weigh in at 2.4grams & being 90% silver that leaves only 2.16grams of silver instead of 2.25grams and if you are buying 350 silver dimes that will short you 0.9 grams per silver dime.. translating to over 1+ troy ounces of silver for that purchase of those 350 heavily circulated dimes!
You can weigh 40 dimes at a time safely on this scale.
Best purchase I have made in a while. Easy to determine weight and you can carry it in a pocket.
Remember this is accurate at .01 grams not grains as some reviewers state!
Customer Review: Great scale Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the scale for weighing loose tea. One serving of tea is 2.2 grams.
When I opened the package I first had a problem trying to open the lid. There's a little button to release the latch. The casing comes off as a bit cheap.
I turned the scale on and it didn't work. I looked in the battery compartment and although the batteries were inserted (two AAA's), there was plastic wrap around each of them. I unwrapped the batteries and tried again, and bingo, the scale lit up like a charm!
However, the underlying scale is awesome! It has a really nice LED readout. The scale works great. I used the tare to weigh a small bowl and put the tea in it. It pretty much weighted a serving of tea within 1/100th of a gram.
So the scale works really well. For the price, it's a great buy!
Customer Review: Wonderful little scale Summary: 5 Stars
I got this to go with my gourmet Experimental Kit Texturas because I knew I'd have to do fractional measurements of grams for the recipes. It also occurred to me it would be very handy for spice measurements for my sausages. It turned out to be the perfect tool.
100 grams isn't a lot, but you want this to go with your fine measurements of spice, especially if you're a picky chef.
Now, I realize that this is mostly for all you coin and gem people out there, but us cooks can put it to good use, too.
There's a standardized weight. If money is on the line with coins and gems, you'll probably want that. For cooking, I don't think you need the standard weight.
Customer Review: Good product Summary: 5 Stars
In terms of description matching features this set of scales matches it exactly. It performs exactly as advertised and is quite well designed. Unlike other scales I have used of this side there are no protruding plastic that interfere with weighing bulky, yet light, objects. The hinged lid is a bonus as it ensures the screen surface and scales are protected.
The build quality exceeds the price paid, however don't expect to be able to throw it around without thought as it definitely isn't designed to be rugged. Uses already identified (and used for) include weighing gems (turns out they were fake anyway!) in carats, weighing coffee beans in grams and measuring powder in grains.
The scales are sensitive, accurate and cheap. Overall very happy with my purchase.
