Customer Review: sharp knives and looks Summary: 4 Stars
this set looks really nice on the countertop, my dad just leaves it out. the knives also have great shape and are extremely sharp. he was a professional chef for years and he loves them. but like other people, we had some issues with it at first...
1. my dad needed extra help[rubber mallet] to open the slide when he first got it. he oiled it up and hasn't had to break out the hammer again.
2. these knives are very light, especially for someone who is used to professionally weighted knives. so handling them was a bit different, but after a few days he said it felt nice to use them as there was very little effort involved.
Overall this set is very nice for someone who cooks a lot, and has a problem taking care of their knives[his wifey throws 'em all in a drawer, tsk-tsk] if you're giving this as a gift i would recommend opening the box and oiling the slide before giving the gift, they'll appreciate it.
Customer Review: Very lightweight and easy to sharpen Summary: 4 Stars
The reason the little knife drawer is hard to operate is that there are two little ball catches that snap into a groove along side the drawer to hold it into place when it is inserted in the underside of the larger board. I turned the drawer upside down and am using it as a smaller cutting board, which I store on top of the larger board. I keep the two knives right on top of the boards because I use them several times a day. The two knives have thin blades and light handles, which are really pretty cheaply made, but I like them very much because they are so lightweight and easy to sharpen with a steel. I have put them in the dishwasher and they do not rust. As another reviewer stated, these thin bladed knives are not meant to cut through dense items (frozen food or tough food). The boards are holding up nicely and are very easy to clean. I really like the light color of the wood.
Customer Review: Slick addition to the kitchen Summary: 4 Stars
I caught this on sale for $20 and was pleasantly surprised by the quality for the price. I was a little leery based on the reviewer who thought the knives were cheap, but they were much sharper than I was led to believe! It's really convenient to have a couple of knives right at hand in the cutting board, especially Santoku-style knives that work so well for common tasks like chopping veggies. As for the complaint that the board lacks feet, a set of 99 cent sticky feet fixed that for me in about 2 seconds. It's a fairly heavy board anyway, so depending on your counter surface you many find you can do without or just take advantage of some rubber shelf liner beneath it to keep it from sliding.
Overall, it's been a showy and functional new addition to the kitchen so far.
