Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier - 7135

Customer Review: First Rate Humidifier
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this unit at Linens N' Things with a discount coupon to use in our bedroom at night. Although we have a humdifier attached to our gas furnace, when we turn the heat off at night, the cold air sucks up the moisture and it becomes hard to breathe. This unit solved the problem.

The unit has quality construction written all over it. The pushbutton controls are logically arranged on the front and the electronic display makes it a breeze to control and monitor both the humidity level(can be adjusted 40-75%) and water level output(five levels). The unit has a handy Auto feature that makes these adjustments automatically depending on the room temperature. I use this feature every night since our room temperature is much colder in the middle of the night. The unit also lets you program it to shut off completely at any interval from 1 to 9 hours. I program it to go off early in the morning when my furnace and main humidifer go on.

I have found that the easiest way to fill the unit is in the bathtub. Simply unscrew the mineral cartridge, turn the tank upside down, and fill it to overflowing. When you screw the mineral cartridge back in, it will elimiminate any excess water, so you cannot overfill the tank. Since the tank is clear, there is never any doubt about how much water is left. Based on my usage, I have found that one full tank lasts me two nights.

A separate gizmo that I have to test the humidity levels in my house confirms that the humidity readings on this unit are accurate.

The unit is whisper quiet. You will not hear any mechanical or gurgling sounds at night(just buy a cheap $30 unit at the drugstore and you will see the difference).

Maintenance requires replacing the mineral cartridge every 2-3 months depending on usage at $12.50 a pop and the silver ion rod that keeps out bacteria each year at $30. Considering the months of comfort that we enjoy from this unit, that's a bargain.

Cleaning the base is easy since it is relatively compact and easily fits under the sink faucet. A symbol lights up on the electronic display to let you know when cleaning is necessary, though you can also easily tell by looking at the base. In any event, you should rinse it once a week with water, and use vinegar if you have any mineral deposits.

This unit provides either warm or cool mist, though we use only the warm mist since that keeps our bedroom temperature from dropping even further. I suggest turning it on about a half hour before bedtime to ensure a warm mist is coming out when you go to sleep since nothing heats instantaneously.

If you want to elimiate stuffy noses in a bedroom or small den, this unit will do the trick. It is not cheap, but it is worth the money.

Customer Review: Wonderful humidifier
Summary: 5 Stars

I've just developed dry eye syndrome and needed a new humidifier. I've now purchased three in the past month. I purchased this humidifier from a local linen store that regularly offers coupons. It far exceeds the other humidifiers I've owned. These are the reasons why:
-The filters are really very economical. Some reviewers complain of expense in maintaining the filters. You do not need to purchase a new filter, only the resin pellets inside. It is easily replaced and much less expensive than buying an entire new filter. The pellets are available in a pack of three at the above store. I would rather use a filter than have white dust all over.
-The instructions specifically say not to fill with water from a water softener or it may crack the tank. I use Pur filtered water to fill it. Filtered water extends the humidifiers filters life. I've never seen any white dust.
-I love the humidistat, but I don't consider it perfectly accurate (it rarely matches my household humidistat). Since the humidistat is built directly into the unit, it's going to read a little higher than my humidistat across the room. It is very simple to realize this and adjust accordingly. What's great is that you can set the humidity level you want and it will maintain it. Some humidifiers allow you to adjust the mist flow, but don't moderate the flow according to the humidity.
-It has an automatic safety shut off for when the water runs out.
-It is simple to fill.
-It has either warm or cool mist.
-It has a filter cleaner indicator.
-It is very, very quiet. I bought this unit to replace the much noiser SPT SU-4010 Ultrasonic Dual-Mist Warm/Cool Humidifier with Ion exchanger. That's a nice little humidifier, but it doesn't put out nearly the same mist and it's much noisier. I couldn't sleep with it in my bedroom.
-It is very well thought and and very well built.
-It is easy to maintain and stays very clean.
-A full tank of water lasts me for about 24 hours depending on the humidity level I want. I keep it running all day, every day without a problem.

I'd buy it again. It was well worth the money.

Customer Review: Great for baby!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my infant daughter's room because she suffers from frequent ear and sinus infections. You do need to keep it 3 to 5 feet off the ground so that the mist can disperse in the air before hitting the floor. The mist is super fine, it reminds me of the steam that comes off of dry ice in a witch's brew during halloween. However, even the fine mist will dampen then floor if you do not have the unit high enough off the ground. I have mine probably almost 3 feet high. Since I'm not quite high enough, I set the mist output level to 3 and the desired humidity level to 50 when she sleeps at night. My carpet is never wet but if I had it going full blast it probably would be. I have never had dust of any kind. I was worried about dust at first after reading other reviews so I bought distilled water but that got old really quick. So I used filtered water from my refridgerator dispenser and never had problems. I recently had a whole house water filtration and softener system put in and so now I am able to run the humidifier without the demineralization cartridge and again no dust. You must clean the unit as instructed!! Use only clean tap water to clean it. You are basically just giving it a good rinse and rub down. I haven't had the need to use the calcium cleaner. One time I did spill water, I had just cleaned the unit and put it back together with a full tank and went to carry the whole thing back upstairs and water did spill. So do not attempt to carry the entire unit with a full tank loaded. It will cause the water to slosh and over release from the tank. Filling the tank is a bit awkward as it will not fit under a standard bathroom sink faucet. In the past I would just fill a water pitcher with filtered water and then pour it in the tank. Now since I have the whole house filter I just fill the tank in the bathtub faucet nearby, much easier and quicker. It is very quiet. It makes an occasional quiet bubble noise as water from the tank is released into the unit below but it's not disturbing at all. We're very happy with it so far! I've had it about 6 months or more now.

Customer Review: I LOVE THIS THING
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned a variety of warm air humidifiers over the past several years and have hated every one of them giving the awful experience of trying to clean the mineral buildup from the boiler. Then I came across the Air-O-Swiss 7135 on Amazon and carefully read the user reviews which convinced me to buy one and try it. I have been using the humidifier for two months now and I too will give it a five star rating.

This thing is wonderful, build quality is excellent, the controls on the front are easy to understand and use. Every two weeks or so, a light on the unit comes on to remind you to clean it. When I go to clean the unit, I can find absolutely no mineral buildup or residue of any kind from the San Diego tap water I use in it. That's not to say that San Diego has clean water, it just means that the mineral cartridge is doing an excellent job of removing the minerals from the water prior to dispensing the fine mist. (NOTE: You absolutely MUST soak the mineral cartridge for twenty-four hours before the first use. Do not take this lightly; the mineral cartridge needs this time to activate in order to do its job).

My wife and I immediately noticed a dramatic difference in our sleep quality the first night of use. No longer did we wake up with a dry mouth or nose. There is no white dust anywhere which has been a problem on inferior humidifier models and you do not have to worry about harmful bacteria or viruses taking up residence since the humidifier uses a stick of silver to kill the little darlings.

I love the unit so much; I just purchased a second one this week to use elsewhere in the house.

If you are on the fence about getting this unit, do not wait any longer, get it now, you will not be disappointed.

Customer Review: Air-O-Swiss Model 7135
Summary: 5 Stars

You'll be extremely impressed the first time you see vaporized mist emitted from this unit. The unit itself is of very good quality, given its plastic construction. Although it includes an ionic silver stick and a filled deminerialization cartridge, be sure to purchase the cartride refills rather than new filled cartridges. It will save you a lot of $$$.

The 600 sq. ft. room area coverage appears questionable. It is a valid estimate if you turn OFF your furnace, which drys the air, and allow this unit to do its job. The output of dry furnace air in a typical bedroom will overpower the output of this unit.

It was difficult to maintain 55% humidity in a 300 sq. ft. room with the furnace ON when the ambient humidity level was 25%. And this was with the unit's fan running on maximum speed. The jury is still out on this issue, as I only purchased the unit yesterday.

Expect to change the water once every 10 hours if you run the unit at maximum speed and have it set to provide 30% humidity over ambient (i.e. have the unit set to 55% because room humidity is 25%.)

And yes, the unit is made in Switzerland. The heater will provide 104 degree F mist. However, that warm mist cools down immediately after becoming ejected. In other words, the mist is somewhat cold once it mixes with the air. However, it appears to reduce temperature drops as advertised.

The bottom line...a little pricey, (...). The manufacturer might prohibit selling this item below retail cost in their vendor contract. I would recommend getting one. However, do not expect this unit to provide an abundent level of humidity during those cold, dry winter nights when your furnance is kicking on every 20 minutes.
