Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Aerobie 80R08 AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker

Customer Review: Just Another Positive Review
Summary: 5 Stars

Looks ugly and cheap. The picture above is somewhat misleading; in actuality the polycarbonate is a cloudy, hazy, blueish appearance, not the crystal clear Lexan as it appears.

May require some upper body effort largely dependant on grind consistency and time of brew.

BPA concerns due to its polycarbonate construction are unwarranted according to lab reports. There's over a 100x more BPA in canned chicken soup [due to the can's lining].

Small, cheap paper disks[smaller than a soup can lid] mean a minor impact on landfills.

Alternative pleas for Pyrex and stainless filter construction forget Pyrex can break under pressure during plunging and forget that the paper filter is a fundamental reason behind the virtually silt-free, lowered-cholesterol beverage improving both taste and texture, and your health.

One of the most compact "brewers", smaller than two stacked cans of toxic chicken soup, and uncomplicated, three very basic components and a tiny paper filters. The completed size and simplicity makes it one of the easiest units to use, store, and to clean.

Requires more ground coffee cup for cup than more traditional brewers of any class regardless of grind although finer grinds use less than coarser grinds.

This Nuevo-French Press requires some experimentation with brew times, grind, amount, and water temperature for the best result.

Makes counter dressers out of all your other brewers regardless of price [including your expensive French Presses]!

Are there any possible improvements? Perhaps a larger-diameter sleeve [maybe we're just a super-sized society]? Different filters for different grinds [something else to tweak]?

Bottom-line: The result of this very modest device invariably spoils you.

Customer Review: WOW!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I Love Coffee and own many different devices for making wonderful coffee (Vacuum pot, french press, Bialetti stovetop mokka pot...and my favorite; a basic saucepan!)and I have to admit that I was skeptical about this purchase. I had been investigating espresso machines and it seemed that the more I learned, the more I realized that to make a great espresso was going to cost me BIG BUCKS...since most of the good espresso machines that deliver the proper pressure are really expensive and on top of that the investment into a top notch burr grinder is a must as well or your money will just be wasted.

Then, I read about this and got really excited and decided to give it a try. I love espresso when it is made PROPERLY and trust me...STARBUCKS DOES NOT MAKE ESPRESSO PROPERLY!!!!! Only true Barista's in true coffee houses know how to make them correctly (and of course people who have the right machinery in their homes as well!) Anyway, I bought this as a cheap alternative mainly just out of curiosity. I AM REALLY IMPRESSED! I have to admit the "espresso" that this little device makes is absolutely fabulous. I think it tastes just as good as some of the best espresso's I have had. (I know...it really is not true espresso since it does not deliver the proper pressure, but who cares when it tastes this good??) I am so glad I purchased this because it saved me big bucks! I love to make Americano's and an occasional latte or cappuccino, and this thing helps me to make the best! Oh, and for the first time in my life I find myself liking coffee black with no sugar when made with this...I NEVER USE TO DRINK COFFEE BLACK, but this is so good and because it has absolutely no bitterness I am finding that I do not want to add anything to it most of the time!

GREAT PRODUCT, EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY, EASY TO USE, AND REALLY EASY TO CLEAN! GIVE IT A TRY AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK!

Customer Review: Great For Hot Water Dispensers At Work or Home...
Summary: 5 Stars

I waited a long time to rate this. It is basically a bunch of plastic, and I thought it could not possibly be all that great. It is also overpriced. I mean, you can buy an electric pot style coffee maker for the same price, or often less.

So, why do I love this?

The coffee it makes is untouchable. I have tried all kinds of coffee makers, french pressers, Melitta style makers, etc. None could get it right. This makes phenomenal coffee every time.

I also love it because I have a hot water dispenser on my sink. Now, if you have to boil a pot of water to make your coffee, this maker may not be that great, because that alone is a pain. But with a hot water dispenser, this becomes a godsend allowing you to make a fantastic cup of coffee in several minutes.

My only complaint is the coffee doesn't hold temperature long and if you add cream or milk, you have to warm it up in the microwave for thirty seconds.

But the coffee is rich and wonderful, whether you are making lattes, espresso or regular coffee. And oh so consistent.

Oh, one other thing, the pressure you have to apply is not as light as the picture implies. It takes a major push to get that plunger down, but that is why it works.

I think this should cost about $10. because it is all plastic. And you need a cup or something that works well to inject the coffee into, it doesn't come with a spouted receptacle, which would make it much much better.

But it is ridiculously easy to clean. You can even clean the filters and reuse them.

I recommend this highly for people that have hot water dispensers at home or work and want to make a fast cup of coffee that is better than you will get at almost any restaurant. I wish the price was lower, but I will tell you, I am getting my money's worth nonetheless.

Customer Review: Worth Its Weight in Jamaican Blue Coffee!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this great coffee / Americana press in May 2008. It makes premium coffee drinks somewhere between a Peets and French pressed coffee quality- providing you use good clean water (and temperature), and quality fresh ground beans to the correct fineness (I usually use the Safeway or Costco rectangular burr grinders set "2 clicks counter-clockwise from the right."). Word of advice on making this unit last as long as possible since I recently had to purchase the thermoplastic/rubbery plunger piece ($6-$7 from Aero-Press) after almost 2 years of daily use: The black thermoplastic plunger will probably be the part that will wear out on you. To prolong or maximize its useful life, immediately after coffee extraction, make sure you either empty and wash the press, or if you need to drink your coffee first, after extraction and before your first sip, separate the black screw-on bottom plastic filter and push through the used ground coffee (into your organic garbage container). It will keep the thermoplastic (rubbery) plunger from prematurely and permanently wearing out due to heat, moisture and constant wall compression of the AeroPress (as it sits in your sink). Once the seal between the plunger and the main cylinder is permanently compromised, the air compression won't press the air through the bottom of this press and your coffee making will be less than perfect. Take it from my experience. With a little bit of experiment, experience and immediate unit separation, it's the best tasting (single) coffee / latte maker, closely second only to your $3-$4 local barista-made beverages. If you do the math, it all really adds up to either wasted money, or $aved money. After trying this, if you still think coffee from a Peets, Tully's or Starbucks is still way better, you either have too much time and money to spend, or you must be a stockholder. Enjoy!

Customer Review: Great Coffee in less than 3 minutes...
Summary: 5 Stars

I have loved coffee most all my life.

I made very good coffee, from when I used a percolator, to the drip filters, Urns and other devices. My late wife quit drinking coffee at restaurants, because restaurant coffee generally was not as good as that at home.

I found the Aeropress on the net and bought one at Amazon...after my wife passed. Now, I really only make coffee for one.

But, I make better coffee, and including grinding the beans, heating the water and 'pressing'... it takes less than three minutes.

I don't use the 'gourmet' brands. I just use good coffee.

I felt the Aeropress was good enough, I purchased one, again through Amazon, for a longtime inter net friend, and now he is hooked.

Through no fault of Amazon's, there were some problems getting it to him. I only mention this, because, unlike several other places I have dealt with, the customer service was EXCELLENT, and they resolved the problem, that was not their fault, by taking care of it, cheerfully, efficiently, and with putting up with this old codgers humor. Thank You.

The Aeropress is QUICK (if your water is heated and the beans are ground, a minute is used, if you go slow... I don't.)

The coffee is clear, clean tasting and rich.

Read and follow the simple directions, the first time, and adjust to your tastes. You won't be sorry.

If you have to make it for more than 'one'... the drip maker will possibly beat you at 4 cups... In time, that is... not taste.

You can make espresso, latte, good ol' mornin' Joe, or coffee so strong it might not need a cup to hold it... (Use one anyway, though).

I take mine black.

Clean up is simple if you feel you need to. But, the process is pretty neat and tidy.
